Difference between Chem 1A and 1HA?

What's the difference between Chemistry 1A and Honors Chemistry 1HA and which one would you guys suggest I take? If it helps to know, I passed AP Chemistry in high school with a 4 and feel like I should know what options I have in regards to taking chemistry for my major.

You can only take 1HA if your in the university honors program. If you are eligible, i would go ahead and take it. Plus, you need to take like a certain amount of honors classes to fulfill your honors requirements.

Yes I’m eligible for the Honors program, but in what way is the class more challenging?

not sure about chem1ha specifically cause i haven’t and won’t be taking it, but how it works for most honors classes is one of the following:

a few honors students are in the regular lecture, but their discussion is with the professor. extra assignments can be given during discussion, but for the classes i took, no extra assignments were given. it was just easier cause my discussion was with my professor instead of with a grad student TA, and my professor graded pretty easy actually.

there’s a small class between the professor and only the honors students that is only available for honors students. these classes can be more challenging, but they’re definitely more interesting too.

Since Chem1HA has a regular counterpart, I would think it wouldn’t be much more challenging than regular chem. Perhaps a bit more challenging, but nothing an honors student can’t handle. I’m pretty sure your discussion section will be with your professor, so you’ll be taught by someone who knows more than a grad student TA, and you’ll be able to get closer to your professor, which might open up doors for research opportunities in your future. And like integral7 said, you need a certain amount of honors units to fulfill your learning contract. You should definitely take 1HA over 1A.

Thanks, that’s quite informative x8equalsDtilde. My only question is now to know if I can somehow have the CNAS Scholars Program change my chemistry class into honors either for my 1A or for my 1B in the next quarter. So as a result my chemistry schedule should have two possibilities:

Chem 1A for Fall Quarter, Chem 1HB for Winter Quarter, and Chem 1HC for Spring Quarter

Chem 1HA for Fall Quarter, Chem 1HB for Winter Quarter, and Chem 1HC for Spring Quarter

np. I’m not sure. You should email an academic advisor. You can find our who yours is here: [CNAS Undergraduate Academic Advising Center: Advisors](Contact Us | CNAS Undergraduate Academic Advising Center)
