I'm reading so many great things about some of the CA CCs, like De Anza, Mt SAC and SMC, and it seems they have alot of transfers into UCLA and Cal. But is it that those CCs attract more competitive students, so more are admitted into top UC schools? Would it be harder for some students to get top grades at those CCs, and maybe they'd be better off at another CC that isn't quite as competitive? Then they could have a chance at getting a higher GPA and getting into UCLA, etc.

Not necessarily, the reason those CC’s have such a good reputation going is mostly because of the students that go and the resources they provide. Some CC’s dont offer TAP/TAG, others may not offer major GE courses needed for their major. I really doubt that UCLA/CAL will be looking at where you went to CC as a deciding factor for admission (unless its TAP/TAG).

You would be better going to a CC that best fits you, IE location, courses offered, Fin Aid, transfer programs, etc. I only went to Mt SAC because it was 5 minutes from my house. A great CC that has been overlooked lately is PCC. Its one of the most beautiful campuses Ive seen, and it has a great transfer rate :)

I was very interested in this topic, as I’m in the same position as you.
What I’ve come to realize is that a school like SMC transfers the most students to UCLA, but that is also because they have 40,000 students, about double the amount of students most other CCs have.
Not to say SMC is not great, you have to look further into these stats.
Good luck with your search!

^Totally agree with you. The reason why the stats say they have the most students admitted to UCLA may be because it has the most students! Still, SMC is a GREAT school with a gorgeous campus and amazing resources. I’ve taken classes at other cc’s in the LA district and they don’t compare to smc. Good luck!

Thank you for all the responses! I appreciate it.

I wasn’t sure if it was worth getting an apartment close to one of those school in order to attend, or just go to the one in our area. It seems better to just stay local, as long as they offer the courses needed in order to transfer.
