Differences In Deferral Letters

I received my Early Action decision yesterday, and I assume I was deferred. However, the e-mail never explicitly states that I was deferred, simply relocated into the regular decision pool. Clearly it has to do with my grades (which are not god-awful, but don't make me cream of the crop), although I am very strong everywhere else! Has anybody else received this? What makes this different from other deferred applicants? Any recommendations on what to do besides sending in my grades? Hopefully I can receive my next decision earlier than indicated. I'm OOS and UM is absolutely my number 1!

E-Mail:

Thank you for your freshman application to the University of Michigan. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we have determined that we will need additional information in order to make a final decision. We will not re-evaluate your application file until after our regular decision deadline of February 1, 2015. We need this additional information and time to ensure that we give your application the best possible review. We will notify you of a final decision on your application by early April.

The quality of grades earned in academic courses is one of several critical factors taken into consideration in evaluating a student's competitive admissibility. To give your application a final evaluation, we will need your fall semester or first trimester grades. Because it is important that we receive these grades as soon as possible, please request to have a PDF of your grades sent from the issuing institution to our office via an e-transcript vendor or to ecredentials@umich.edu. If your counselor sent the initial School Report for your application through The Common Application online portal, they will need to complete the 2014-2015 MidYear Report using the same method. Otherwise, please ask your high school counselor to fax a report of these grades to our office at 734-936-0740.

Be sure your U-M ID is on all materials submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

We appreciate your interest in the University of Michigan and look forward to receiving the information requested. If you have specific follow-up questions, please visit https://umich.custhelp.com or phone 734-764-7433. We look forward to reviewing your completed application and appreciate your interest in the University of Michigan.

I received a similar email. I’m not sure either

Yea… I got something else as my email, here it is:

Dear epicorangeninja:

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2015. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.

While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, your application remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early April, 2015.

Strong fall semester or trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require. Please refer to the website https://umich.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2080 for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next.

We hope your interest in Michigan continues. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year.

Sincerely,

Erica L. Sanders
Interim Director

There’s not much difference in the letters except one specifically mentions LSA and the other doesn’t. They both say the application will be reviewed again later, they both say to send a current transcript, they both say a final decision will be made by April. The biggest difference other than mentioning LSA is one has more detail about sending the transcript and the other does not have that detail. One says don’t send more than asked for and the other letter doesn’t. There’s a third one floating around or there was in previous years that specifically mentions legacy status. Which college and whether they have the legacy letter this year probably determines which letter is received. The letters have been virtually identical for a number of years now.

@Epicorangeninja‌ I received an identical letter to yours.
33 ACT
2220 SAT: 770 Math / 730 CR / 720 writing
Full AP/honors curriculum
Plenty of accomplished EC’s (I’m very proud of them and I wrote extensively about them I’m just not going to go into them now)

I truly think it’s because they cut the EA rate by almost half this year and we are the first year that’s feeling the heat. I’m not really worried, I’m just going to trust the process and let what happens in the RD round happen.

Yea, and according to last year’s thread, @LTLion15‌ , we can find out January 31st!!

From what I remember from last year, there was three different deferral letters. One said we don’t need any additional info unless you want to send it, one said they needed second semester grades, and I don’t remember what the third said.

This is what mine said:

Dear ________:

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2014. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements.
Sincerely,

Theodore L. Spencer
Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director

They were very late on their decisions last year, but I was accepted on March 28th with regular decision students.

@goblue58 The third letter was exactly the same as yours, except it mentioned legacy ties.

@goblue58‌ did you end up sending additional materials? did you email the admissions office? Just looking for any help on going from deferred to accepted

It seems to me that kids with higher stats got Epic’s letter and kids with lower stats got the first letter posted above

I recd the same letter as Epic but I didn’t apply EA. I applied RD. So I’m really not sure what to make of this at all.

@qCollegePlz‌ I sent in my grades (which weren’t stellar) and an email to my regional counselor expressing my interest.

Wait, @Dungareedoll‌ , you applied Rd and got a decision already for deferal? Are you sure you didn’t accidently hit early action? :)
