Hello,
I’m a rising senior working on my application for universities in Florida (I’m in-state and would like to apply to UF, FSU, and UCF). My GPA and grades are decent, but I have one issue that I’m afraid will negatively impact my acceptance chances. I was an online-school student in 9th and 10th grade. Then, I attended a public high school for 11th grade. I may be transferring to another school for 12th grade for personal reasons. Because of this, I have no consistent participation in school clubs, so my extracurriculars are minimal. Will this hurt my college chances, especially for low acceptance universities similar to UF?
Did you do anything outside of school, like a church group or boy/girl scouts, volunteer work? If so, play up those things. If not, you just have to do what you can to explain what your interests are and how you participate.
Technically not a different school for every year, though 3 is still a lot
UF says that ECs are considered “very important”. You may not have school-based club activities, but do you have activities that you do/have done?
In theory, as an online student in your first 2 years of HS you had more time available to you than a school-based student. What did you do with your out-of-school time? When you went to your current school, did you continue doing those things or add new ones? If you added new ones, will you keep it/them up in your next school? they will understand limited/fractured in-school ECs, but will still expect that you have been doing something constructive after school.
@twoinanddone @collegemom3717 I have around 300 volunteer hours from freshman and sophomore year, as I had a lot of time to volunteer during online school. I also played and continue to play classical piano. During the summers, I participated in a volunteer summer camp & the Girls Who Code program. I’m on a youth advisory board for a non-profit organization. That’s about it, though.
That’s plenty of ECs.
…esp if you have had some growth in responsibilities in your volunteer role(s)…
