My D will be applying this summer for next summer admission to FSU. On her resume/list of extracurricular activities and such, should she list activities she intends to continue in 12th grade or just that she did them from 9th to 11th. I guess we're toying on whether to say for example National Honor Society 11 and 12th grade, or just 11th. That's just an example.

We appreciate your help as most are you are successful applicants/parents at this point. Thanks!

My son is also applying this summer for next summer's admission. We are just starting the application process and I'm finding it all daunting.

I have a question about the essay. I read where the topic will not be available until August 1. That seems late to me, especially if they open the online application on August 1st. Am I reading this correctly?

Last year they actually left up the topics from the year before, and an email to admissions around June resulted in a response that they would be the same. D worked on one (used to be they asked for answers to 2 of 4 topics), and lo and behold, on Aug 1 they changed.....new topics and only one essay required. She was able to tweek what she had for one of the topics.

Perhaps they don't want you to have too much time to be too "polished" and aritificial.

And FYI last year they said 8/1 but the application did not go live until 8/15.

So start working on the resume etc, and then late July or early Aug when the topics are listed (who knows, maybe they will be the same...) and when the application goes live, your student can get started. D went on the first day--8/15, and got an ID/password. She did not hit send until first week in Sept. The first application period did not close until early October.

I think that if it goes live 8/1, and everything is completed by the student by 9/1, you are still ahead of the game.

It is my understanding that as long as you apply by October 10th, you will be placed in the first wave of admissions, and it does not matter when during the period you actually apply. I would take the time and make sure everything is perfect before you submit the application. Also as a side note- you can send your SAT/ACT scores after the deadline and they will still be considered, as long as you have some record of scores on file. They will update to the new scores, but won't add them once the deadline has passed. They will take them up to the day before notification.

Well, rumor has it that earlier applications go to an admissions counselor for review earlier, and when there are less applications to review early in the cycle, the rep has a little more time to spend. I would not hurry an application, but if the app, the resume and the essay are done, submit it early Sept along with scores and transcripts, and don't wait until the rush at the last minute. And as technology will have it, there are some who wait until the end, only to find they missed the first deadline altogether.

It has been recommended by the FSU Admission's rep for us to get the app in asap when it goes live - like w/in a day or 2. But maybe that's because we're oos.

So, is it just me or is this FSU application process overwhelming? Maybe its because it has been 35 years since I was in this situation and this is our first/only child going to college. With FSU being so much more competitive than his other college choices I'm concerned about being precise, filling in all the particulars. I'm a nervous wreck.

Wow- when I had a meeting with an admissions counselor, she told me that they don't start evaluating them until all of the applications are in.. Maybe she was mistaken? I submitted my actual online application around September 20th, but my GC forgot to send the transcripts and I didn't realize until the day of the deadline. I had to skip class and make a bunch of frantic phone calls (and the office was really busy), and managed to get them to let me fax them over and still meet the deadline. Their fax machine was broken, so after trying it a bunch of times I had to call back and she gave me her office fax number to use. I also had my GC mail a sealed paper copy to them after faxing it. She did this to about 20 other people (forgot to send transcripts), and many of them didn't realize until they missed the deadline (including one to MIT). Everyone was furious with her.

I went a few weeks or so later to the UMiami vs. FSU game, and went to talk to the admissions lady about AP credits, and found out that they never received my SAT scores. I called up CollegeBoard (which showed that I had sent them on their site), and they said that they sent them and they would investigate and get back to me "in 5-10 business days". I was irate and asked for a supervisor. They admitted that they had made the mistake and FSU inputted the scores. Previous to this, I was mistimed for one SAT test, and ACT lost my test completely! I don't understand how these companies expect to stay in business with these business practices, but it just goes to show you that you have to be proactive and make sure everything is in on time and not to rely on other people for anything to get done.

Good luck and I hope you don't have the same experience I did (it was not the fault of anyone at FSU, and they helped a lot to make sure I was put into the first pool of applicants).

Pistolen, you know that your post doesn't help calm me much, don't you? Wow - what a nightmare that must've been for you! If I could only get my son to understand these scenarios and that the worst CAN happen. Really, you have to be prepared for the worst!

haha yeah, well it certainly paid off. In the beginning, I kind of figured that they would be responsible and do their job (send the transcripts, send the scores, etc..), but I now see that this isn't always the case. It's very important to make sure that things get done in a timely manner.
rudysmom- I would go ahead and have your son call FSU and make sure they have received everything, and that the application is complete a few weeks before the application deadline. That way, if something is missing you will be able to fix it and also have peace of mind. You can also look on the status check page (https://admissions.fsu.edu/StatusCheck/), but it takes a while to update sometimes.

Good luck to you and your son. I hope to see him around campus :-)

Haha, speaking of this story...
I just got an e-mail today saying that FSU hasn't received my final transcripts yet. I asked my GC to send them over 3 weeks ago!! I guess she never learns... I think she needs to be replaced. I only had 1 meeting with her regarding college apps, and it went like this:
GC: "So where are you going next year?"
Me: "Florida State"
GC: "Oh good! That's my Alma Matter!"
Me: "Ok I'll see you around"
GC: "Bye."

I think this is part of the reason why not too many people from our class go to top schools. We are a USNews top 20 highschool, and our valedictorian was rejected from UPenn, and the 2 people who applied to MIT were rejected. We have one person going to NYU, and everyone else is going to UF/FSU/UCF/USF. We only have 98 people in our class, so I don't think she has a very difficult job.

Last summer based upon the advice of the experts on this board :) my S got his application in early withing a couple weeks after it opened. when we visited in late august and met with an admissions rep he told us they were already reviewing his file. if fsu is your first choice get your application and essay prefected and apply early.

This is my D's #1 school of choice and we want to apply early but she also wants to take her SAT and ACT tests again but the deadline for the scores won't be available until the end of October, a few weeks after the first deadline. Should we still apply early and send the scores she has now? Will admissions wait until the first Fall SAT and ACT scores before making a decision? When does FSU start making decisions from the first deadline admissions?
