I'm a transfer student and so far I've gotten into LA,SD,D,and I.. I'm trying to decide from either LA or SD. The main difference is that at SD, my major is Communication (which i prefer) and Asian American studies at LA (i dont mind, but not first pick; i picked it cuz i was scared and just wanted to get in). What do you guys suggest? I'm leaning towards SD cuz of major and the fact that LA is too close to home for me and I sort of want to get away.
At the same time, LA is significantly more prestigious...

oh and i'd normally post this in the UC Transfers section but its crazy right now w/ LA decisions coming out lol

^lol well you gotta admit, UCLA is the name-brand college. Don’t get me wrong, i’m not saying their academic level is different, i’m just saying UCLA is more famous. And I’m Asian, so “name-brand”, stereotypically and unfortunately enough, is a big deal –

Well if that’s important to you, then ok whatever. I don’t know why you would go to a school just cause the name sounds good to random people when it seems like you’d rather go to UCSD. But also, why couldn’t you just switch into communications there? Is it impacted? I wouldn’t think so. I don’t see how applying for communications would have lowered your chances of getting accepted either, but seriously, do whatever you want. My suggestion, don’t pick a place for a name. Pick the place where you want to be for 4 years.

Yeah its very impacted, I wouldnt even have been looked at if I applied for Communications at LA lol. Its not just the name, I was wondering if the SD campus is nice, the neighbordhood/environment, etc. I’ve been to la numerous times but i have nothing to compare it to

^Oh ok on it being impacted. I was just thinking “I hope this person knows what they’re talking about”. Ha ha. I would honestly recommend visiting UCSD. Obviously you’re very short on time (under 2 weeks to go), but I would do it as soon as you can. I haven’t been to UCLA so I can’t compare campuses.

Lol yea i already checked all those out… lol sorry if i seem like i’m doubting sd in anyway, i was seriously so set on going to SD but after actually being admitted to LA, i’m just getting doubts again and feel that i’d feel guilty (in some way lol) for rejecting la’s offer.

Yeah can you visit at all? LA and SD I guess are similar in some ways but also very different. SD I think is very beachy and laidback, it’s located literally right next to the beach in a rich suburb-y area. LA is pretty much next to Hollywood so you have lots of the big-city feel nearby. San Diego’s downtown, club/bar scene is probably a 15 min drive from campus. So it depends what environment you prefer.

Also, agreed completely with what Kings said above - don’t pick a place because it’s prestigious, you need to honestly think about where you would fit in better and where you are going to be happiest for 4 years of your life. Good luck

^Yeah exactly. If you feel like you’ll be happiest at LA for 4 years. Go there. If you feel like you’ll be happiest at UCSD for 4 years. Then go there. If I got admitted to Berkeley, I still wouldn’t go there just because it’s not the kind of place I see myself. I don’t think I’d enjoy it as much as UCSD and Davis for that matter, but the name is definitely more well known, but really, that shouldn’t matter. All of your choices are good, pick the one you’ll be happiest at.

I think it’s because in the previous posts you guys both said “where you’ll be happiest for the next 4 years”. He’s a transfer so it’d only be 2.

There’s no such thing as impacted majors at UCLA. -.-"

You can basically change majors to anything you want from the College of L&S except Econ for transfers. The College also doesn’t contain any majors in Engineering.
