I'm thinking about becomming a dentist, but this seems like a good place to ask this anyway.

To get into a dentistry school, I have to take things similar to pre-med, like chemistry and organic chemistry, for example.

My school (Michigan State University) offers 3 chemistry classes:

141: general chemestry for non-chemistry majors
151: general chemistry for chemistry majors
181H: honors chemistry

and additionally, 2 organic chemistry classes (I might have the numbers wrong but whatever):
231: Organic chemistry, chem 141 is a prerequiste
331: Organic chemistry, chem 151/181H are prerequisites (not 141).

I don't like chemistry enough to make it my major, but when I apply to the school of dentistry, will it matter which of these classes I take? If I take 141 and 231, will my chances be lower than if i took 151 and 331?

Thanks in advance for your feedback :)

No. You’d only be taking the harder classes for yourself. If you don’t want to put in the the extra work/sweat/tears into the higher level classes, don’t bother. You won’t impress med school adcoms by taking the “honors” gen chem course as opposed to the “regular” one for non-chem majors.

I disagree. At least with medcom’s they WILL ask you why you didn’t take the chemistry meant for premeds. I’m pretty sure that 151/231 are meant for premeds and chem major, its prob more like science.

Also, acceptd aren’t you about to start as a freshman in college? If so, I recommend that you wait till you have some experience before you try to give premeds advice. If not, I am very sorry to speak such harsh words.

Also, don’t forget about the DAT. Later on, you might really regret not having taken the classes that would have prepared you for the test. From what i’ve heard the DAT is pretty similar to the MCAT

I’m with Accepted. I don’t think they will ask, frankly I don’t even think that they will care much. I took general o chem instead of the one for majors (I am a biochem major and should have taken the major class) mainly because I wanted the professor that taught the general class. He is recognized as one of the best teachers at my former uni (his time sucked though. 7AM, ick). Nobody asked about it. Even if they noticed (and I doubt they spent much time combing through my classes and looking for minute details like that when many schools might not even have major and non-major classes for things like o-chem), I seriously doubt it hurt me, as I performed well in my higher classes. That being said, I know for a fact that honors and majors classes prepare you just fine for the MCAT/DAT. They just are more in depth, and if anything will prepare you better in terms of concept stuff. However, unless you take the MCAT right after the class, you’ll probably have lost that edge.

Oh, and ChemFreak, don’t give Accepted a rough time. You just finished your first year of undergrad, so I suggest that you get off your high horse.

I can probably find about 10+ threads where this same topic has been beaten to death. “Will it hurt me if I don’t take the Honors version of a course?” In each of these threads the general consensus has been “No,” so I thought I’d be nice and save the OP the trouble of having to browse these forums for the older thread (Keep in mind, the No’s came from experienced posters, a lot more experienced than you ChemFreak, like BDM and mmmcdowe as he did in this thread as well).

And yea, I am going to be a freshman next year, but at least I have the decency to read similar threads before I post. Maybe you should do the same.
