DIII - Academically top-notch, not so much in tennis?

First off, I'm going to be a junior in the 2009-2010 school year. I'm interested in playing tennis at a DIII school when the time comes. While I'm not bad at tennis, I'm not nationally ranked or anything and I'm not blow-your-mind brilliant. I will most likely be playing 3rd singles on the Varsity team this year, and hopefully will be playing 1st/2nd singles senior year.

I have a 6.59 GPA out of a 7.0, but if you convert it to a 4.0 scale, it's about a 3.9ish. I'm in at least the top 10, maybe top 5 out of about 90. On the most recent practice SAT test I took (yesterday), I got a 2300 - 800M, 740CR, and 760W. My SATII scores as they stand as of now are BioM - 800, Math IIC- 760, Chem - 780. I'm hoping to retake the Math IIC and get an 800... I took it under less-than-ideal conditions the first time around.

My first priority in college is, of course, academics. I would really like to go to a LAC - my top college choices as of now are Carleton and Swarthmore. However, I would like to continue playing tennis in college, ideally at the highest level (the varsity level). As I've stated before, I'm not brilliant at tennis, but I have been improving rapidly and I am currently able to play competitively with my age group in my region.

When is the best time to being contacting coaches and let them know that I am interested in playing on their teams in college? Does anyone know of any academically top-notch DIII schools that a decent, but not spectacular tennis player could play or at least, walk-on to?

I’d wait until probably spring of this year, as you’re still a long way away.
