Dilemma: What to do over the summer? Any parental advice here?

I've found that now I have a bunch of time in my hands and that I have no idea what to do with it except to study for next year. I'd therefore like to seek expertise or advice in this area.

This is very worrying because I know it is unhealthy to study nonstop and it is also going to be hurtful when it comes time to apply for college. Therefore I am hoping some of you will be able to advise and suggest some activities or ideas that I can immediately step into.

Thanks :)

Get a summer job!

Find a job. Make your own job, whether mowing lawns or giving music lessons or tutoring math or whatever you can do well. Do volunteer work in an area you think you might eventually like to work in. Do volunteer in any area that needs help. Follow an interest you haven't had time for during the school year: art or music or geology or astronomy or tae kwon do or photography or... Take some fun classes. Help around the house. I'm sure there are lots more ideas, but that's a start anyway.

Job is probably the best thing in most cases. Can't find a job? There are tons and tons of volunteer opportunities around. Find your local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, the Red Cross, any hospitals nearby?

Okay, this is coming from a student, and I'd also suggest a summer job, but if you can't find a job, don't make work for yourself (i.e studying for next year, there'll be plenty of time for that next year). If you have nothing to do, enjoy it while you can. Sit out in the sun, hang out with friends, see a movie, have some fun. You only have a few summers left.

What are you interested in? what are you HS ECs...are there any that you can carry over in a new way over the summer? is there something you are really interested in that you haven't had the chance to explore?

I have to tell you , as a mother of two HS girls, many of their friends who do "nothing" during the summer complain about how bored they are, because most of their friends are doing things- a class, a hobby, a job, volunteering, art, etc and they find the kids that are available to hang out with are not they kind of kids they have anything in common with anyway

I mean, you can still see lots of movies, sit out in the sun, etc, and do something...

So what are your interests? What do you want to study in college?

Work. Barring that, volunteer someplace.

work, work, or work. those are the only three options i can think of.

Go camping. Take little inexpensive trips. Relax a bit and restore your energy.

And since I'm a parent when you're not camping... work. :)
