Hey guys,

recently I got an offer from Mcgill. I already paid both my deposits for Northeastern, though. However, due to the new offer, I am torn between these two schools. Mcgill wants me to pay a deposit as well by May 1st, however, the conditions are for me to get a certain score on the IB diploma, which I believe I can easily get.
My question: Can I pay the deposit for Mcgill, wait until June 6th and find out my results and then decide? Could I reject NU in June still if I decide to go to Mcgill? Or will there be consequences? The same goes for Mcgill.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

You would lose your deposit at Northeastern, but I don’t believe you would get in any trouble. I would recommend seeing if anyone else who posts in this thread believes differently, however.

Double depositing is a bad idea. I know you like both schools and all, but you just shouldn’t do it. You could be taking a spot away from a really hopeful waitlistee, and if either school finds out you deposited somewhere else as well, they can rescind your admission.

Best case scenario: Neither school finds out and you lose the $600 deposit to NEU(unless you appeal it).

I think this situation is a bit different from normal though. As of now, he has a pending offer from one institution. This really seems like its exactly the kind of scenario that deposits are meant to cover, though I find it rather strange that McGill would even ask for a deposit if you haven’t been officially accepted.

You can get in a lot of trouble (such as losing places at both schools) for double depositing.

And it’s not as strange as you think for them to require it. Several schools require IB or AP scores as part of a conditional acceptance. But unless they just want a pass, I’d be hesitant to be “sure” you’ll get a certain score. I worked really hard and was really proud of my 6s. Going in, I was certain I get at least 5s, probably 6s. But think of it this way- if they are requiring a 6 on HL History and you get really bad questions on your paper 3 that are all a little too different than what you studied (what happened to me), and your paper 2 questions are phrased in a way that eliminates half of the facts you studied for it… Just try and be careful. If you really want to go there, then even though I’m really against double depositing, I’d suggest doing it. But don’t give up on all your other options (Northeastern included), because there were a lot of really good students in my grad class who didn’t get the scores they thought they would because of chance.

And good luck on your exams! Only a few weeks away!

Hey thank you all. Yea I decided not to do it, since NU is the best school for what I am looking for:) and yea… IB… now just gotta study to pass:p
