Dilemma

With the deadline rapidly approaching, I have a bit of a dilemma. I have already accepted Rice's offer of admission, but I really really love UVa. I did not get my financial aid package for UVa and will not until May 1st (long story). Although I love Rice and may attend anyway even if I get a strong enough aid package from Virginia to make it affordable, I would like to leave that option open since the only reason I counted it out was because of the lack of an aid award.

I'm currently inquiring to see if I can get a candidate reply deadline extension from UVa, but my concern is this: If I can get one, will Rice penalize me for not having withdrawn my application from UVa by the deadline? I would think it would work kind of like a waitlist, and if I decide to attend UVa I lose my deposit to Rice (which I would feel bad about since they waived it for me D: ) and everything.

However, if there is a chance that Rice will rescind my offer of admission for not having turned down UVa by May 1st I would rather just not risk it and turn down UVa (I would also feel bad about this because they would be going through a lot of trouble to have my aid package ready ASAP and because I was given an amazing opportunity there that is hard to pass up).

Does anyone know how a situation like this would work? Am I in danger of anything by not turning down UVa just yet? This is assuming I get a deadline extension, of course. haha

Rice offers waitlisted applicants spots in their incoming class after May 1, after those applicants have submitted a deposit elsewhere. It seems like turnabouts is fair play.

If you choose to go to UVa after May 1, Rice has a waitlist of applicants that would be glad to take your place.

You shouldn’t go to Rice over UVa because of a sense of obligation and Rice shouldn’t want to have someone on campus who would rather be somewhere else.

RD is not like ED. You do not have to withdraw applications or formally decline offers. When May 1st passes and you have not accepted or gotten an extension, your spot is gone. If you change your mind about going to Rice, you have to notify them when you decide to make a deposit at UVa. What is not allowed is to have 2 deposits in at the same time for different schools. Read he offer letter carefully for any other conditions.

Okay, thanks guys. I’m 99% sure I want to go to Rice over UVa anyway but I’d still like to keep the option for UVa open until I know how much I’d have to pay. Thanks.

Ditto to the above. You should be fine. Rice is better than UVa… why would you want to go there?

Turning down UVA is tough dude. I made the same decision last year. It was much closer, more “traditional”, and I liked the athletics better. I felt the academics were comparable, but ultimately the facilities, surrounding locality, and financial aid just didn’t match up.

You won’t be penalized. Good luck with the decision dude.

@Owl2014 - The Echols Program at UVa is really appealing, and I am already becoming really good friends with my fellow Echols Scholars. Tilgaham’s comment also applies except for the “much closer” and the “surrounding locality” parts.

Thanks for the comment and reassurance, Tilgaham. I’ll probably see you next fall (though I probably won’t know it haha).

Both are great schools and the decision really comes down to where you will be happy (and finances). UVa has a truly beautiful campus.

I do hope you come to Rice as you seem to have been interested and wanting to come here. (from your posts). Good luck on your decision!

They’re both awesome schools, and UVA was in my top three. It’s in-state for me, and I was named to the Echols Program. I declined their offer though, because I received no aid there and $51K for the first year at Rice, after appealing my offer there.
UVA’s a great school, but because I’d rather study engineering than business as an undergrad (altho McIntire at UVA is a great undergrad business program), i chose Rice and I’m really looking forward to going there next year. Now I just have to formally decline Vandy’s offer.

Sounds like we are in really similar situations, jgorman450.

I’ll most likely be turning down UVa either tonight or tomorrow morning because my extension request was denied since I apparently did not respond to their request for more information (not true, as evidenced by several facts including the fax they received with one of the forms they requested - I know they received it since they took it off my To Do list).

I’m extremely excited to be an Owl next year, though it’s going to be very hard to say no to UVa, Vandy, and Middlebury tonight. ='(

You will forget everything once O-Week rolls around. You will be bleeding blue and gray by the end of it.

Anyways, welcome to Rice!
