Waitlist confusion

Hey guys,

So my friend was admitted to WashU during the regular decision cycle. She was also waitlisted at Duke and Rice. Duke just took her off the waitlist, and she has until next Friday to respond with a decision. However, Rice is still her top choice, but hasn't responded to her yet. If given the offer, she would pick Rice over Duke and WashU.

The question is: suppose she were to accept Duke's offer. She would then tell WashU she isn't attending. But if, later, Rice also takes her off the waitlist, is she allowed to then decline Duke for Rice? Does being offered a spot off the waitlist commit you to an institution in the same way ED does or can she accept Duke's offer and turn it down later if taken off the Rice list?

Thanks for the help.

By accepting Duke in good faith (i.e. no other offer from Rice in hand), she isn’t doing anything wrong. If by chance Rice comes later, she is not bound by Duke – nor do I expect any document she would have to sign/certify to Duke would limit her from withdrawing at a future date.
