taking a summer class at a college vs going abroad to volunteer for environmental awareness. it's obviously better to go abroad, but i already have a lot of awards and
activities going on and only went to one college last summer for a 10 week program each saturday. isn't it good to have experience from a college course???
HELPP

hahahh thanks! i would really love to do both, but the two schedules don’t match up, and i was wondering which would be a better option for me if i wanted to go to cornell human ec.

I would go abroad if it’s consistent with the rest of your activities. Especially if the college program costs lots of money-- it will reek of privilege and ostentatiousness.

Some of the summer abroad opportunities, even those with a significant volunteer component, also reek of privilege. Depends on whether or not you have to pay to go, and how much. Our high school’s counselors said all of those options are fine, if that’s what you want to do and if it shows interest/commitment to something – with the caveat that those that require parental expenditures can look a little “special.” FWIW, we did send our son abroad one summer, to study in his field of interest. But, the next summer he stayed home, took a college class, and did research with a local professor. Both were fun and valuable. In retrospect, he talks much more about the summer in the UK and how much he liked it and wants to go back! And he never used his pre-Cornell college credit … even though he got an A+ in the class at a well known university! (It was in his major, so he has already taken too many other, more advanced courses in the subject.)
