I had a very good time at Dimensions last week. But I've heard that the experience at dimensions is very different from what Dartmouth is like usually. Any current students who can give any insight on how they felt at dimensions vs. how they feel at dartmouth? Dartmouth was not really in the picture before but Dimensions definitely changed my mind. But I don't want to be making a choice based on the wrong reasons.

The admit weekend shows at ALL schools are somewhat different from daily experience of an enrolled student, and Dartmouth is no exception. The schools are putting their best foot forward. These events are good at showing you what the campus looks like and what the school has to offer, but going to college there won’t be quite so much round-the-clock activities and fun.

What was valid to take away from the weekend it the sense you got of your fellow prospects and potential classmates, the sense of fun and wit and genuine enthusiasm they have for their school, and the opportunities that exist.

Dimensions is a dog and pony show. A good one. And as a Dartmouth alumnus, it’s hard for me to rag on the place. But no weekend dog and pony show can provide a solid indicator of the next four years.

In fact, your experiences in the next four years will have as much to do with you–your energies, your passions, your attitudes–than with the institution you choose to attend.

So don’t fret. Go with your gut.

My D was at Dimensions last weekend and, based on her comments, seemed to be able to separate the show from the substance. She was enjoyed the show and was impressed by the substance.

what if i felt the other way? (no gut feeling, but tons of analytical reasons for choosing dartmouth–people love it there, great academics, rep/connections, etc). are there any students who felt the same way (it was nice/fun, but not love or a “i should be here/i could see being here for the next four years ecstatically” sort of deal)?
