DIning at U of CHicago

I am an alum and I have to say the dining there when I attended was really bad (early 80's). I have a daughter who has applied but one major consideration for where she goes is the food. She has medical issues and needs to eat well to be healthy. Has UofC contracted out their dining services or are they still run locally?

Nowadays, the University contracts out its dining services to Aramark. I don’t know much about the nutrition of the food; the most vocal complaint against Aramark in recent years has been against its poor treatment of its workers.

Anyhow, you can look up the menus for the dining halls here, and see if the nutritional information matches what your daughter needs.
D did not complain about food when she went there.

We parents ate in the dining hall quite a few times and found the chow to be pretty good too. And this was not a parents weekend special.

The only way to really assess this, though, is to visit.

Dining hall food is very, very good in comparison with other universities. I was displeased with the dining services as a first year, but 3 years later, it seems they have made substantial improvements to all dining halls as a part of the opening of South Campus. Consequently, even I, who am very picky about food, have to say that the food options are quite good.

If she attends, have her request South Campus, there are many, many very good food choices there and I would guess she would be quite content.

Okay, thanks. Contracting out to Aramark is a big, big improvement. When dh and I attended over 25 years ago, the food was prepared by the very powerful union that also supplied the orderlies in the hospital system. Because of this, much of the food was barely edible and I lost weight to a not good weight when I was eating there.

The food is pretty good. Personally, I prefer Bartlett over South, though there isn’t a huge difference. Bartlett has a better grill / pasta station.

For instance, a typical meal might be pasta with spinach, garlic, cilantro, peppers, onions, chicken and Alfredo sauce. And then some ice cream as desert for the road.
