Hi, my D got a letter saying the Direct Unsub loan she qualified for is being dispersed to University X (a school she was accepted to but declined to enroll at). The letter is very official/from government, saying $2737.00 is being dispersed 8/20/2010.

I tried calling University X's admissions office but got sent to voice mail purgatory, and gave up--no way to leave a message, no way to talk to a person (I'm sure they are very busy w/ their incoming students, so I understand).

I just wondered if I should worry about this. She did not accept any loans...at UniversityX or at her current school.

Just wondered if this happens to others and is nothing of concern or something I should get written confirmation that it is cleared up?
Thanks

Don’t call University X for help (I suspect they’re in on it, but just incase); they won’t be able to help you. the people in charge are at the Federal Government, and if they bunged up (likely!) then you should contact the Department of Education’s Office of Student Fiscal Aid for immediate termination of the Master Promissory Note.

First, make SURE your D did not accept a loan at this school. Students often insist to me that they didn’t accept loans, but I can see exactly who accepted it and when … and often they DID accept the loans (even if they still aren’t quite sure what they did!).

Loans will not pay out without entrance counseling and a signed master promissory note. They will also not pay out unless your D is enrolled at least half time (make sure she didn’t enroll & then neglect to drop the courses - another thing I do see happen).

That said, I actually have seen a case where a loan was disbursed and the student never attended. It was an error on the part of the financial aid office staff at the school - they somehow mixed up students. That student had received loans there in the past, though. The best way to know for sure is to log into www.nslds.gov. You will need your D’s PIN from the FAFSA. Look at her account & see what’s what. There will be a customer service number for Direct Loans on the website.

Thanks Kelsmom!
She definitely did not accept anything; she formally declined enrollment & didn’t even accept offered loans at current school; she’s never attended University X. I did find the number for Direct Loans at US Dept of Ed; they cannot find any record of a loan in her name/SS# which seems odd since they issued the disclosure statement. They transferred me to “loan origination” which also had no record. Again; the statement came from them, why would they have no record?

D has a very very common last name, and somewhat not-unheard-of first name; I begin to wonder if they somehow mixed her up with someone else of same name.

Direct Loans people recommended I call the University where she enrolled and explain the situation. I asked why would I do that? They said “in case University X contacts IU, they will know what’s up”…weird. Anyway, I emailed University X’s office of Financial Aid. But not IU.

I will have D look up her FAFSA stuff when she gets back from a camping trip she’s on!
