Direct Loans Disclosure Statement WRONG!

This was received in my email today. The subsidized loans show 0. If I was awarded the full amount should I not worry about it? Has anyone else had an error on their statement?

Did you actually accept a subsidized loan? If so, there should be an amount on the disclosure statement. Did you also accept an unsub loan? Is that amount correct on the statement? Have you looked at your account online? Are the financial aid awards still what you thought they were, or have they had to adjust your sub loan to 0 for some reason?

Yes, I accepted both and was awarded both. For some reason the disclosure statement shows 0 for sub. A friend of mine at the same school shows the same thing…

Your contact for these questions is your school’s financial aid office.

Saw your other post on same- and that you did speak with FA. This seems to be ordinary confusion. My vague understanding is this: once the lender approves you, the school must verify your status and set the loan amount. Paperwork is exchanged between the school and lender. There is sometimes a lag. In our case, we got the disclosure for #1 but nothing on the on #2- nothing for either was shown online. IF the school said you are ok, you probably are. I asked them the specific amount(s) and was thus able do do my own math.

You will worry about it if all the money you took was UN-subsidized loan, because payment for those unsubsidized loan normally will be due from the month after you took the loan. In other words, you will start paying the loan while you are still in school.

No, unsubsidized does not mean you “start paying the loan while you are still in school.” What it means is that interest accrues while you are still in school. You are not required to repay interest or principle until 6 months after you graduate, leave school, or drop below half time. If you do not repay interest as it accrues, you will end up owing interest on the interest when it’s repayment time.
