Direct Med at Prairie View A&M or Plan II Honors at UT Austin

So I got into Plan II Honors at UT Austin and a direct med program at Prairie View A&M University that feeds into UT Medical Branch. I'm not too sure which to pick. At UT, I'd be getting a better education that will prepare me, give me a well-rounded education, and make me more competitive for better medical programs (among some other advantages); the only problem is, I'm not guaranteed a seat in medical school. But at PV, I have a guaranteed seat in a Medical School. The problem is, that's it. There isn't much at PV. They have two labs on the whole campus, close to no options for EC's, the campus is pretty dead (middle of nowhere), no diversity in the student population, no foreign language options except for Mandarin, Arabic, and Spanish (I would like more), and some other disadvantages. The medical school obviously has greater weight on the pros and cons list, but I'm still not sure what I would like to sacrifice.

Speaking with other students, I've learned that almost 99% of the kids that apply to medical school from Plan II get in. I have personally not read that statistic anywhere. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I appreciate any guidance I can get in making this decision. Thank you in advance. Please comment if you would like more information.

So, to you, the only redeeming feature of PVAMU is the direct med program. For that you are willing to trade 4 years of engaged learning, academic flexibility, diverse social life, and a more thorough preparation for your chosen career. I don’t think anyone on the planet can answer that for you. Except you. I know what I want you to say, but then again. So do you.

That being said, Plan II is the only half-acre of that God-forsaken burnt orange hellish 40 acre nightmare I like at all, and I love everything I know about the program. Just please don’t root for them in any sport or any other competitive activity. Or buy a sweatshirt. Or bumper sticker. Or ever make the Hook-em sign.

UT-MB is a very good medical school and if I was a medical student, the curriculum, location, and unique atmosphere would appeal to me very much.

And btw, congrats. I have a feeling you might have other hard choices to make before you are done. You’ve obviously been doing something right.

Good luck.
