Directing Theatre/Film Program

Hi! Sorry for making this here, I didn’t really know where else to put this topic. I’m currently in HS and looking for a school with a BFA or BA in directing or in theatre with a directing concentration. I was wondering if anyone knew of any directing programs that focus on both film and theatre because I haven’t been able to find anything. I would also love advice from anyone in any directing program ATM and their opinions on it. Thank you so much!

UNCSA has 2 options for directing concentrations. One in the school of drama and another in the film school. (Some very successful film directors have come from both programs).

Other Schools with directing options include NYU, Carnegie, DePaul, Cornish, USC, UCLA, Relativity school, Columbia college in Chicago, and possibly University of the Arts, and Chapman University. (Not positive about the last two- but think directing is an option there)

Good luck to you.

I think Pace has a directing program.

The University of the Arts has a fantastic program called DPP (Directing, Playwriting, and Producing). They also perform and take acting classes; I don’t know if that’s a requirement, but I know many do, and they’re talented. It’s a highly respected major at the University.

At JMU in VA you can be a double major in Theatre with an emphasis in Directing, and Media Arts and Design with an emphasis in Digital Video Production. Theatre/ Media Arts is a popular double major.

Awesome! Thank you all so much for the info.! It helps a lot. Are there any majors that focus on directing in both film and theatre (without having to double major)? I don’t know if any exist.

@randomaccounts I’m not sure you would be able to double major as the programs are so intensive. I think many directing programs that are housed within drama/acting schools may do a bit of both theatre and film. Film schools obviously focus on film/tv. However, acting/drama schools often do both theater and film/tv training. People think acting programs are for theater/stage only - but many have at least a small film component these days. You need to look into specific schools that may interest you and search the curriculum, ask for more info, email/set up meetings, etc. These are great questions to ask - but each school will have a different take.

I have heard University of the Arts has a lot of flexibility between programs. We know kids majoring in one area and minoring in another or doing a “double concentration” in two majors. Take a look. It may offer what you are looking for as they offer directing, film, acting, etc.

Thank you so much for this!! I definitely will look into it

Ball State University has both a BA Directing Option and a BA in Telecommunications Film and Media. My D is double majoring with a BA Theatre Studies and a BA in Telecommunications Film and Media with emphasis on performance and writing in Theatre Studies major. Much of the curriculum crosses over in both departments so it is relatively easy to pursue both majors. She turned down BFA offers because of her interest in writing/producing. She’s found the training in both to be great. The Telecommunications end of things is largely funded by David Letterman so the department is well know nationally.
