Do you guys recommend it, and does it count towards your 10gb/month usage limit? If it does, did anyone find it an inconvenience towards minding your internet usage?

it shouldnt count towards your limit as it is within the cornell network…

you’re like mariambaby now…asking every single question

personally there are pros/cons to having a TV in college…

it doesn’t count toward internet usage. I don’t mind my internet usage anyway hence nearly doubling the allowable limit last month. well, knowing that I do that I do keep track of site that tells me how much I’ve used…but it’s never unreasonable. I watch a lot of high-def shows on my computer (because I don’t have a TV, we’ll get to that).

in my opinion to get any decent channels you have to pay over $50. you should look at the packages (same as on the DirecTV website) and see if you’d be willing to get the cheapest one. also in my experience with my own TV and the public ones in the dorm, sometimes the picture behavior would be weird and my research on the internet told me to adjust an antenna or something and I was like … yeah I can’t do that. I love love love Cornell but my TV-watching experience here has got to be one of the least pleasant parts (because in general I can hardly be more impressed with the place.)

I used Slingbox and it was great. I had an extra 22 inch monitor for my computer and I watched TV without trouble and monthly expense.

that’s interesting but probably not practical for most people…

how exactly does slingbox work starbound?

A Slingbox unit can be purchased for around $150 at big box retailers. I hooked my slingbox up to my home cable and computer. When I want to watch tv, I log onto slingbox through my computer and watch my home cable stations. There are a few different versions of slingbox - all described on their website, but the one that I have works independently of what my family is watching so I can watch whatever I want. The cost of the slingbox unit plus the extra monitor (bought on sale for around $100) was much less than a monthly cable bill and TV. I am basically computer illiterate - hooking up the slingbox was easy. It was also nice to have the extra monitor to use with my laptop for actual school work :)

^—My dad has one of these that he uses ALL the time, whenever we go on vacation if he doesn’t watch what we are, he turns on his compy and watches from there.

If Cornell really does have restrictions on internet and tv usage (well…maybe that’s not it, what exactly is the ‘usage’ limit?) then I’ll definitely consider using one.

starbound, the slingboxes don’t work only with certain computers, right? I have a MacBook, just making sure it’d still set-up easily.

EDIT: oh, didn’t see the extra monitor thing, that might be worth the expense too. But yeah, I’d still need to set it up via my Macbook probably.

starbound, since you use a slingbox, do you feel like it makes it hard to stay within your 10gig/month (if you even do)? Or will you more than likely run over that if you watch much TV.

I have a MAC and slingbox works fine with that. Other family members have PCs, and it works with those as well. I never had a problem with any kind of limitation. I’d say I watch TV a moderate amount.

hmmm, this slingbox thing sounds appealing. thanks for the info.

btw, going over the 10 gigs is no big deal. as I said before I go flagrantly over it every single month…it costs me like a hearty lunch at Trillium. or like the cost of downloading an album from iTunes. it’s not like you’re all of a sudden going to have huge fees. so probably $5-$10 dollars a month for internet, and I’m watching 4-5 hours of high res TV a week on top of lots of other usage.

urrite…comparable to what one would pay for dial-up service…

although heavy users like me will see $50+ bills :D

once saw a $70 one back when the limit was 5gb :D

Days of watching TV will be over very soon. You’ll be happy to have time to eat and sleep. No point in wasting $ on TV.
