Disappointed because UCSD TAG extremely likely to get rejected

Note: My CC doesn't do +'s or -'s for grades.
Note: UCSD TAG wants a 3.5 GPA by the end of Fall

I am not yet at the 3.5 GPA (I'm at a 3.45 not including this Fall semester). But, I already checked what I needed this semester. I know I'll get 2 A's from my 2 GE classes, but Chem, and programming class are likely to be B's.

I was predicting I would get all A's except for programming and I need at least 3 A's and 1 B at the very least this Fall to reach the 3.5. But, today I found out I didn't do good on my last midterm for chem.

I now have to get 100% on remaining labs for chem as well as 100% on the final just to get the A (actually, it won't even be 90% then, it'll be 89.0%).

For programming, I need to get like a 97-98% on the last midterm remaining as well as 97-98% on the final to reach 90% in the class.

If I get 2 A's in my GE's, but 2 B's from chem and programming class, my GPA by end of Fall will be 3.43.

So, basically I am pretty much doomed to have my UCSD TAG fullfilled.
I'm now worried that I won't have a good chance for getting into UCSD.
Any advice?

What is your major?

zcarfaz, it’s computer science

Computer Science is impacted at UCSD as of this year, so TAG really wouldn’t have guaranteed you admission into your major, regardless. I guess it would matter a lot if you were set on coming to UCSD regardless of major; if not though it was really just a guarantee that you’d be admitted as an undeclared major. But having or not having TAG isn’t likely to have drastically changed your fate in terms of admission as a computer science major.

That being said, it’s unfortunate that you may have wasted your TAG. You probably could’ve picked another UC to TAG to and qualified to have that early peace of mind that you were already guaranteed somewhere.

CS is not impacted for transfers until next year.

That’s right, I was thinking about freshmen admissions. Regardless, UCSD TAG doesn’t admit students directly to their major regardless, so the same rationale applies. Computer Science is one of those competitive majors, like Biology or Engineering, where TAG really isn’t going to come into play for admissions because they’re already very selective.

CS isn’t impacted for Fall 2014 phew (the year I am applying for, I’ll have submitted my apps this month), so they may just use TAG to put me in the major since it’s not impacted. Regardless though, do you think I’ll have a good chance with a 3.43 to be admitted to UCSD CS major since they aren’t impacted for Fall 2014?

Again UCSD doesn’t just automatically admit students into their major because of TAG. They’re granted acceptance into the university, but also evaluated for admission into their major and can be rejected for their major, but then admitted as undeclared with TAG.

As far as your chances for CS at UCSD, it’s really hard to say. I really don’t know enough about admissions for that major and haven’t talked to a lot of CS transfers to really know. Normally, I would say having a 3.43 w/ your prereqs finished for most majors at UCSD would give you a high likelihood for admission. However, CS is one of those competitive majors where that may not be the case. UCSD has a very well-respected and very competitive CS program, which is why the major has become impacted for freshmen and is soon to be for transfers. If you want a decent indicator of what your chances just might be, I’d suggest going back into previous UCSD acceptances threads and looking to see what stats other CS majors had when they were admitted or rejected.

Does UCSD specify what gpa they want?

My UCSD TAG email was hella brief. It didn’t even tell me if I was accepted. is it b/c my gpa is way above 3.5?

UCSD and several of the other UC’s don’t do early evaluations for TAG, so all they send you is a generic message that says they received and processed your TAG application. You won’t be officially evaluated for TAG until they review your application some time in the spring and then release they’ll release their admission decisions and you’ll find out if you were admitted through TAG. Right now, they haven’t even begun the process to determine if you meet the TAG requirements. The GPA requirement for UCSD TAG is a 3.5 through the end of spring. However, you and everyone else received a generic response, it had nothing to do with GPA.

@dilapidatedmind, ok, thanks for the critique on my 3.43 GPA

I have a 3.45 too! And I’m taking chem which I need an A but have an 82 in the class -_-
I tagged to UCI tho just to be safe.

I tagged to UCSD for Economics but I didn’t really update my UC Tag Admission Planner because the deadline was due on October 30 and everything is correct (All my grades are there, classes) but not all the community colleges I attended (4 colleges under 1 district). Can’t change it anymore as UCSD approved my tag. I just put everything under one of the colleges (the main one I attended). Will my tag get revoked?

Basically what I’m asking is if the UC admission Planner can make or break your TAG. I updated all my information in the actual application itself (due tomorrow) with correct schools. Just can’t change the stupid uc planner.

Talk to your professor maybe you can work something out.
I’ve had a 74% once after our final exam and I talked to my professor for half an hour and I found out when our grades were out that he gave me a B.
Many professors do this…just FYI
Especially for the students that actually apply themselves such as yourself.
