What are my chances?

Well UCSD changed the minimum requirement for TAG from a 3.0 to a 3.5 for Fall of 2012. Pretty much screwed me over. My GPA is only around 3.0, and I think I can raise it up to 3.2 by the time I apply. I know few friends got accepted with only 3.0-3.3 through TAG while few other friends were put on a wait list with 3.6 because they didn't TAG. From what I see, the chance of me getting in seems pretty tough. My major is Econ which is like the second most popular major at UCSD.
Recently I met with a speaker from UCSD about transferring. She was like literally told me the school is looking for students with at least GPA of 3.5 Then I asked if they look at anything else since I've done some volunteer and clubs, and about my personal statement. She said "no" straight up.
I finished most of the classes that I need for the major besides Calcs. Most of my grades are like B's (about 16 B's) just a couple A's. And a C in a GE course.
Will they accept me?

UCSD seems to care first and foremost about GPA, then about completed prerequisites/ IGETC. They don’t read personal statements. If your GPA isn’t high enough, they probably won’t even look at your extra curriculars (which I’m not sure if they even care about either).

If you maintain your GPA above 3.0, you can always TAG to one of the other UCs and still apply to UCSD normally… but your chances aren’t good for getting into UCSD. Have you completed the IGETC?

Quick question what’s a TAG?

thecomfycat, I almost finish with the IGETC. There’s probably like 2 classes left I need to take.

@FallingDown: Completing the IGETC (which you’ll have until spring 2012 to do - and don’t forget to fill out the paperwork to get IGETC certified by your CC or else it won’t count) will help you at least a little bit. Anything that means you’ll graduate quicker will help you, which means completing IGETC and as many lower division courses for your major as possible, preferably all of them (as listed on assist.org).

Keep in mind that not all the colleges at UCSD accept the IGETC, so prioritize those that do on you application (Revelle and Roosevelt don’t accept IGETC). There’s not much more you can do, aside from TAG’ing to another UC that you meet the requirements for as a backup.

@swaqqq: TAG stands for Transfer Admission Guarantee, which is a program for California community college transfer students. Each UC has one except for UCLA and Berkeley. You can only TAG to one UC, and each UC has slightly different TAG requirements. You apply for it in September, before your UC app in November.

@thecomfycat: Thanks for your response. I guess I can’t do much but work harder to raise my GPA before applying. Finishing IGETC and the classes for my major is not a problem. I will have them done in another semester. If I don’t get in UCSD, I’ll probably go to Fullerton. My real major is Accounting, but I have so much interest in Economics.
