Discovery Weekend

Thanks so much! I’ll be sure to do that.

I just got an invite to go all expense paid visit. Anybody else got it and does anybody know how many people get it? I’m deff going

My son just received this invite also. Are there any other students interested in fine arts planning to attend the weekend? I just joined this forum and it seems better for students. He would probably like to know more about their fine arts program.

My son just received the Discovery Weekend invitation in the mail today, but his was not an offer for all expenses paid. I wonder how they decide for which students they’ll pay. Based on SAT scores?

Maybe. I know that minority students are more likely to be paid for. My invitation says “as a guest of the Black Student Association”, so that’s who paid for me. Are you not a minority?

^ Yes, half Hispanic. He had previously received a form to fill out for their scholarship committees and just returned it yesterday. I don’t think he’ll go to Discovery, since it’s not paid for and it takes up two school days. We’ll see.

That’s odd. It might be due to his something in his profile, then.

My son is hispanic also…no idea why he got the free ride but did send his May SAT scores to WU which were good…perhaps it’s his interest in the arts and zero interest in med school that seems quaint and worthy of a plane trip; also such a zany choice of major with a 730 math score must clearly indicate a kid in need of financial support (if not now, certainly after getting a BFA).

Very happy to report that my D also was offered a trip out for discovery weekend. It came in a very impressive fedex envelope, and my first thought on seeing the envelope was that WashU was going a little overboard with its mailings! My D is not a minority, but she did already send her ACT scores to WashU, and also returned the scholarship postcard the same day it arrived several weeks ago. I really hope she can fit the trip into her crazy school schedule.

Does anyone know how many get invited each year?

To answer some of your questions, I’m fairly certain that they choose who to invite and who gets full trip paid according to the scholarship form they send online. If you stand out, they pay for your trip given that you return that online form by the time they make their decision. Even if the trip is not all-expenses-paid, DW is a GREAT experience and it was actually how I initially fell in love with the university! Though there are many minorities attending, it is not a prerequisite in any manner, even for the paid trips.
Also, I might be hosting some of you if you were invited by ALAS!

Oh, and I think around 300-350 attend

Acolombian, thank you for your response. Perhaps if DS had returned his scholarship form right away things might have turned out differently. This might be a valuable lesson learned that the “early bird gets the worm”. Both DS and I are procrastinators, but we’ll have to do better in the future.

In any case, I’ll ask DS to respond with a nice thank you for the invitation, explaining that he will be unable to attend because of a limited budget. That couldn’t hurt, and maybe they’ll offer to pay. Who knows?

For anyone who has been or even our friendly host, what time do the guests usually leave on Saturday morning? I got my ticket yesterday and my flight time sucks.

PayFor, I think if your son had responded sooner, he may have had that paid trip, but don’t worry too much over it if they are unable to work something out (considering it is coming up soon), since you still may be in the running not only for admission, but also a scholarship! Make sure, however, that you meet the deadline for applying to the scholarships. I would strongly recommend the Rodriguez scholarship, although you should apply for all you are ably to apply for!
Guests can leave anywhere from around 7 in the morning to about noon. I remember some left so early, they didn’t even have shuttles available for them to the airport. Don’t worry too much about the time, everyone has to wake up too early on Saturday so just try sleeping on the plane.

Shoot - my (youngest) daughter is disappointed she didn’t get the paid-trip invitation either. Older daughter, who is just one year ahead, did get the paid-trip letter last year, and D1’s stats were very good, but not as good as D2’s. I saved D1’s letter from last year and it was dated July 31, and Discovery Weekend itself was earlier, Sept 18-20, so maybe there is still hope that letters are coming out???

^Perhaps there is still time. But it could just be that your younger daughter didn’t do exactly what your oldest daughter did. Maybe she hasn’t shown as much interest as your older daughter. Or perhaps she didn’t turn in one piece of mail that was used decide who would be invited. No one really knows why or how they choose the people they choose. But I’ll be hoping to see your daughter at DW!

Thanks! You’re right - D1 did show interest early on by applying for WashU’s pre-college art program the summer before (although she ended up going to RISD’s pre-college program instead). And someone from the Sam Fox School of Art called her over the summer last year and they chatted a bit. D2 has had no such contact. Really, all she has done is visit once two springs breaks ago, and send WashU her SAT scores in June.

Another thought I had was that maybe art is one of those “under-subscribed” majors and WashU was/is trying to build the program, perhaps making D1 a more interesting/desirable applicant.

I’ll drive myself crazy thinking about this, so maybe I’ll just STOP!

What is the scholarship form people are referring to? One posted seemed to describe a card of some sort that was returned to school, while someone else made it sound like an online response. I don’t know about either.

I received a scholarship booklet in the mail (but didn’t notice anything to return until the scholarship applications are filed).

I remember sending a couple of things to WashU - some brownish paper MONTHS ago and a postcard more recently. I sent out a lot of stuff a few months ago, so I honestly can’t remember what those pieces were actually for. I also submitted my pre-application ridiculously early (like two weeks ago) in hopes of getting invited.

My plane leaves at 7:00 on Saturday morning. I’m really bummed because I was hoping to spend some time on campus in Saturday… or at least, be able to see people.
