Discovery Weekend

How many people get the expenses-paid invitation?

My D received a mailing asking if she was interested in scholarships. The form she returned wanted test info, GPA, main EC’s - stuff like that. I was thinking it was a postcard, but probably instead it was on cardstock and was mailed back in an envelope. You wouldn’t really want to send those details in a postcard! I think that came in early July.

Austinhills and PayFor, think of it this way: for $45, your child would get the 2 nights, all meals, and airport shuttle service - basically all except the plane ticket. Maybe austinhills can find a good deal since Texas is so close. Also, based on threads from last year, it sounded like kids got these paid trip offers at various times, so maybe there’s still hope.

Applicannot - I imagine a lot of students will have early flights on Saturday. Maybe it’s an excuse for staying up all night Friday with your new friends  That’s pretty much what happened at my son’s orientation weekend (at another college). He had a blast.

Oh yeah, I don’t plan on sleeping at all! I never eat/drink caffeine, so I intend to have a steady supply - it works best if you don’t get it often!

The form I meant is something like FauxNom described: it asks for GPA, EC, and scores as well as just general questions over all. I’m not sure how they’re doing it this year or even how they did it last year, I just remember that last year I got an email saying WashU Scholarships want to know more about you, or something along those lines, and I filled it out and landed myself a paid trip. They may offer you a paid trip later if you turn it in late, just not during DW if it’s too late for that.

Anyone know if there’s a deadline for signing up?

Also, I just sent my SATs to Washu. I got an invite…any chance they would consider paying for me to go if my scores a pritty good?

My daughter called to RSVP “yes” last Thursday and they said she would be emailed the ticket information. We have not gotten anything yet -and I was wondering if most people got the email after RSVPing fairly quickly?

I got my ticket about two days later. You should probably get yours today or tomorrow, given that the weekend was just here. I also got a paper in the mail with my schedule, but I didn’t get the “list of things to bring” as Ms. Colliday said we would. I’m assuming there’s another mailing.

You were right - we got the email today and the schedule last week! Exciting! There was an invitation for parents to pay their own way to go see the school too - but I think its a wonderful experience for a kid to make this trip alone and be totally uninfluenced by a parent… what a great opportunity! I know you will all have an amazing time.

I got my confirmation packet today, too.

Do you know what date this went out? I have been away at a summer program and may have missed it. Is it online? I had received it for other school and in summer diversity science program? Wondered if anyone found it online or called them. I am interested but don’t think my mother can drive me there.

i got invited, plus all expenses paid. i was just there for portfolio plus (5 week art camp) so it’ll be nice to go back

ricosuave413
how was the art summer program? was it fine arts or performing arts? what is your opinion of their programs in the arts?

My son got an invitation too…but not a paid one. Boo. I wonder if it makes sense for him to go, if the school is evaluating kids on “who gets a scholarship” that weekend. Although his friends are a diverse group (Indian, Cuban, Japanese, Canadian, Jewish…my mother calls them the “UN”) he’s white and Catholic. I also wonder what parents do during this time? What should he wear: blazers for the welcome dinner? or is it more casual? Does it have to be two+ days? He’s an easy-going kid, but is thinking he doesn’t need to be there for so long. Maybe he’ll love it, but he’s also so busy at school that 2+ days is a lot of time away. Thoughts? Advice?

I’m just a mom, but I haven’t gotten the impression that DW is for scholarship evaluation purposes at all. Students can ask for an admissions interview if they want one. I suppose if a student ignored a fully-paid invitation, the college might see that as a lack of interest. But if a student chooses not to fly out there on his own dime, it would hardly be fair to ding him.

As far as schedule goes, they’ll really have just the afternoon/evening on Thursday, and then all day Friday, since they are expected to leave Saturday morning. That seems like a good amount of time to fully see the place. I don’t know if many parents go. The woman I spoke to at the office said parents are more than welcome, but we clearly aren’t an essential part of the experience - our kids will be very busy trying out college life. I’m not sure whether I’ll go along or not - much as I would love to see WashU.

Thanks FauxNom. With so may kids touting their free ride to DW, I was discouraged that we didn’t get that too. But now I realize the school isn’t doing it 'cuz they “like them more”. Rather, it’s simply financial. And no, we didn’t ask for or need a scholarship.

Truth is, I think the DW will “seal the deal” for my son. He already has WUSL on his list. Maybe this will put it at the top. Sounds like a great experience, my son is very adaptable, so he’ll make friends and have a good time. I hope he gets to see their science labs. Now that would really put WUSL on the top.

How did you get accepted into this… I didn’t get an invite, was it b/c I didn’t get a scholarship form, were my SAT scores not good enough? Is there a way I can apply anyway?

As far as needed the financial aid, I had already turned in my PreApp thing online and it said that we aren’t planning on receiving need based financial aid. I was surprised that I was offered an all expenses paid trip because I would’ve thought I shouldn’t qualify… go figure

It isn’t really decided by financial aid, but more along the lines of merit and if a certain group or scholarship on campus likes you for you to get the all-expense-paid trip

If you didn’t get an invite, is there a way to request one?
