Discussion on Housing

Hi, I am placed in a regular double in Freeborn Hall albeit it not being my 1st choice. I am concerned about the socializing scene and whether or not the hall is 'too religious'? I am an atheist so will this be a problem?

I would really appreciate it if someone could shed some lights about the pros and cons in freeborn before I make a decision of whether to request for a transfer to Unit 3 or 2.

Ok just because it is the substance free building does not mean everyone in there are Christians. I lived there for 2 years and I am not Christian. There will be a variety of people you will meet and some of them will be religious and others are not. If you are the party/drinking type then yes, I suggest you to request a transfer to a different building. If you can live without drinking/drugs then stay in freeborn.

I apologize for the hasty generalization. It was based off from reviews I read online. Anyway, I am not much of the party/drinking type but am one who likes to to socialize. I enjoy chilling and just hanging out to watch TV and have great conversations with people. Do you know when will I know who my assigned roommate is?

I’m in freeborn hall in a triple. I’m non-practising Hindu, I don’t think I have a problem with not drinking for an year there. The thing I do have a problem is that I’m imagining there would be stigmatization of alcohol and strong condemnation of consumption outside the hall.

Would anyone confirm/deny this? Not drinking doesn’t scare me. My imagination of how to community would react scares me.

If you interpret “substance free” as “diversity free”, then you won’t be disappointed.

you guys are overreacting…if you are in Freeborn but want to drink, you can go drink in other dorms with friends I’m sure you will make throughout the year. If you don’t want to drink, you don’t have to. Never feel pressured to do anything you don’t want to. That’s very important for college as these are the years you are trying to find things out about yourself.

For what it’s worth, some of the hardest ragers I know lived in Freeborn. They have this interesting mentality of ‘I don’t want to live with people who come back home wasted, but that doesn’t mean I can’t do it outside of the premises’. Kind of like closet drunks, but inside out.

Looks like Freeborn will be fun. Dibbledoodle, don’t you think that’s just one aspect of everyone there? I’m sure there will be a lot of diversity when we start considering other factors of their personality :)
