so in the summer i took several blue book tests, averaged around 2310/2350
i didnt sign up for any sat's but once december came around, somehow i was persuaded to take the test via standby w/o recent practice
i felt bad about the test after i took it and i really considered canceling, but because i was naive and unaware that many colleges still require all scores to be sent, i chose to receive the score
and, frankly, i am utterly discouraged by my score of 2170... i mean truly dejected.

i sent a screenshot of my score to be added to the "PWNED!" youtube video thing, you know, the slideshow of ridiculous photos of people/things getting raped to the max

but anyways my sincere questions are:

1) is it "normal" to show so much contrast between practices and first SAT

2) am i at a disadvantage now that this score is on my record, assuming that i do one day earn a 2300+ (hopefully in jan. testing after hardcore prepping in break)?

this seems like the right place for one of those "ZOMG SHOULD I RETAKE FOR A 12 ON MY ESSAY EVEN THOUGH I GOT A 2400?" responses, but I'm in a good mood today, so here's a serious answer.

CHILL OUT. You are a sophomore, you get to PICK which scores you send. If you don't like it, fine. Drop it and take it again. If you are scoring this high as sophomore, there is no reason why you can't get a 2400.

Most likely you were just really nervous because you thought this was the defining moment of your high school career. It doesn't matter, really. Your SAT score is only a small portion of your admissions process. Just remember to relax on your next test date, and you should be fine.

i thought my essay was definitely smashing enough to deserve to rank with the twelves...
and 710 for cr translates to about 7 wrong which is totally totally impossible, i thought i would get 4 wrong, tops...
and the 72 for my writing mcq translates to about 4 wrong when hey, in the first place iirc i was only stuck at 2 of the harder writing mcqs for a longer while and am pretty sure i nailed em!!

to bigb14: this is my last possible window for the jan 1 deadlines. and i was the coolest dude in the test center that day was already chillaxing all around cuz it was all so easy. =(

I am honestly considering calling them, although I do not want to pay for a hand-grading. I am bad at vocabulary, but I am always good at the passages and it's hard for me to believe that I got about 12 wrong for the 650.

1) Yes. It's a lot harder to take the real thing: all of the factors besides the actual difficulty of the test that you don't figure on come into play: endurance (you can't take a stroll around you house, or relax in a comfy chair at your test center), test-stress, self-consciousness, general nervousness.

2) Not really, no. Assuming you score in the 2300 range, all schools you'll apply to will superscore. The only issue is if you have to take it more than three times, which starts to get sketchy.

I'd advise you not to take it in January. 2 weeks of preparation, no matter how "hardcore," are not enough for you to achieve your full potential. There's no rush--you've got an entire year to take it.
