Okay, so I'm freaking out like crazy right now. I transferred to FSU from TCC in the spring with a pretty solid GPA. I only took 12 credits in the spring at FSU but had a rough patch in one of my classes. I should have gotten a B- in the class, but due to my professor's participation and absence policy, she gave me an F. I didn't know where I stood in the class because the way it worked is that you submitted your absence excuses and then on the last day of class, she'd decide which she approved or not. I had an 82 in the class after my final exam, but then she docked a shitload of points at the very end (I can provide a screenshot from BlackBoard if needed), so I ended up getting an F. That class brought down my FSU GPA to a 1.50 (cumulative was still above 2.0). I was never notified about being placed on academic probation. I never received any e-mail, a correspondence from the university, anything from my advisor, nothing ever showed up in MyFSU or Student Central, so I went ahead and took a class over Summer B out of interest since it was only offered during summer (special topics class), which raised my FSU GPA to a 1.8.

However, today I got an e-mail saying that because I didn't raise it to a 2.0, I've been academically dismissed from FSU. I know that I have to speak to my dean and everything and all of that will be done tomorrow. But I just wanted to know what to expect, how plausible it is that I get back in. I'm literally about to break down right now. Has this ever happened to anyone? Success rate of being reinstated? omg...

You worked hard at TCC to earn a chance to attend FSU…and then you do not go to the class or participate?!?I am sure your prof explained her policy in the beginning. Why do you think you should occupy a seat that another would be grateful for after you have a 1.8 average? It is not like you are a Freshman adjusting to college life. You were already a college student and chose not to either attend class or participate which is entirely necessary for learning, Learn from your mistake and if you earn any opportunity in the future, do not squander it. I wish you luck with it!

The “you didn’t tell me I was on probation” excuse didn’t work for FSU when in fact you should have inquired earlier, been proactive and taken more summer classes to boost your gpa.
Getting an F for absenteeism shows a lack of respect and poor attitude on your part.
Blaming the professor for reinforcing her policy will get you nowhere as an argument.

Follow the appeal process for FSU.
Good luck.

I don’t know if this has been settled, but just from reading this, I really wouldn’t be surprised to see this end up with an unfavorable outcome for you.

If the attendance/participation policy was listed in the class syllabus, unless you have a really good excuse for missing so many classes, you’re going to be basically out of luck in fighting it. And then if you had such a great excuse for missing what sounds like several class meetings, I’m sure that the professor would have been understanding.

All that aside, I don’t think you’re going to have much luck. You have just learned a valuable lesson: if you’re going to skip class, be prepared for the repercussions.

Most professors I have seen would require a truly excessive (10+ meetings across the semester) number of absences to have your grade drop to an F. If you were missing a class every week or two, which that would require, you’re talking an insane number of missed classes.
