Diversity at Brandeis

I’m an African-American female who applied to Brandeis on a whim because I was notified that I may qualify for scholarships, and I was given the wonderful Blue-Ribbon app. I got admitted with the Justice Brandeis scholarship, which was amazing, and so far it is my best financial package. On the strong possibility that I may be going there next year, how is the diversity, specifically for African-Americans? An exact number of blacks would be nice, and also the types of clubs and organizations that are available.

Black percentage is 2.5

I visited this Spring Break........and as far as I saw there isn't really too much diversity - white folk everywhere, but it was still a pretty nice campus.

By the way, I also live in Houston and was a blue ribbon applicant.

2.5% is hella small... yikes... but my school is 14% black so maybe it's not that different... hopefully... Are you going to Brandeis??

I absolutely love Houston but I'm ready for a change.. are you going to go to Brandeis? How is Mass different than Hou, and how is the campus, compared to one like Rice??

Uhh...Brandeis gave me a great financial package, but it's not my first choice.....Rice definitley has more sex appeal as far as the campus is concerned...Rice has the Oak trees and great location and while Brandeis has pretty cool architechture and is on a cool, lumpy hill, it's outside of Boston and felt somewhat lonely. Although the people there were quite nice. It was cold and grey this week, so maybe that contributed to my skepticism, but......yeah, i'm with you, I like Houston, but I've been here for 348723 years and could use a change.

what are your top colleges?? what kind of aid did Brandeis give you, and will it affect where you go??

my top colleges are Brown, Penn and Chicago, reaches probably....Brandeis gave me the Trustee Scholarship, I believe, which covers like 75% of the tuition and all.........and, who knows, depending on what kind of acceptance letters/financial aid awards i get, it might have an effect.

Brandeis was definitely not my top choice... I like Amherst, Rice, Wash U, Wash Lee, and Cornell. But if the money is right, I can't argue. My parents can't really pay for college.

Brandeis was one of my top choices before I received their scholarship. Now, I've been thinking about the diversity issue too. My closest friends are of different ethnic groups so, I'm not worried so much about the lack of Blacks but more on feeling isolated if that makes sense. I don't know. I'll probably visit on April 4th, if there aren't any problems with missing school.

The largest minority groups on campus are Asians and Indians. I'm surprised that the number of black students is so low because it doesn't seem that way around campus or in the dorms. I think the admissions office is really pushing for diversity while still trying to keep a decent amount of religious Jews. To me this place is reasonably diverse, although I would like to see this increase. My floor alone has people from all different countries, faiths, and ethnicities. The percentage of black students may seem low but there are organizations like the Black Students' Organization and the Mosaic program (which I strongly recommend). I've gone to a couple of dance classes sponsored by the Carribean Connexion. The Posse Program gives qualified minority students from NYC high schools scholarships to go here. I've said before that Brandeis students are very accepting of other cultures/backgrounds, at least in my experience.

Are there many Indians at Brandeis? Does anyone have an estimated number?

im a urm and got full scholarship..44,000 renewable 4 years

Wow, all these scholarships. What were your stats? I wish that I could earn a scholarship from Brandeis, but my 3.6 gpa probably wouldn't cut it.

i no this is off topic, but how is the parties, girls, and social life at brandeis?

dayobball, there are a million posts regarding this issue. Please look at one of those.

whenwillitbeover, to me it seems like there are a lot of Indians here-many international but also a good amount are American. I don't have an exact number for you, but trust me, it is a visible group.
