Hey there.

How diverse is Northeastern university? I went for the Welcome Day event today and did not see a significant international presence... Could this be coz of finals/graduation,etc???

Are there a lot of Indians on the campus? I only see the grad students... How many do you reckon there are in each class?

Cheers

lol i am in the same position as you
I also didn't see many Indians on campus.
The environment of the campus was really nice.
Everybody who I talked to was very nice and helpful.

Yeah.. I agree with you.. Really love the campus.....

When did you visit NU? I went up and spoke to these two girls ( one was of Indian origin ) and they did not like NU.. According to them, NU does not run enouugh activities over the weekend and the food is about the same everyday... they're transfering to UCONN next semester.. Doh!

Btw, you Indian too? What are the other colleges you are considering?

I don't know if this will help, but there are a few active South Asian Student Organizations on campus. Utsav, an undergraduate organization that is by far the largest, is active throughout campus.

http://www.utsav.neu.edu/

If that website doesn't work, you can just google "Northeastern UTSAV."

As for other races/ethnicities, from the Princeton Review...
International: 4%
African American: 6%
Asian: 7%
Caucasian: 63%
Hispanic: 5%

Although I suspect that this information is a bit outdated... I think I saw updated stats somewhere on NEU's website. Maybe someone can post it if they find it.

Yes, I am Indian
I got admitted to
CUNY Baruch
SUNY Binghamton
Northeastern University
waitlisted for UMich, BC, and BU
i am looking into undergraduate business and NU is looking pretty good
I do plan on graduating in 4 years instead of five and doing two coops

what about u?
which colleges did u apply to?

Thanks for the link monomania.

I applied to lotsa schools but I've shorlisted it to UMich, Penn State, Northeastern and BU. Deciding between Michigan and Northeastern... If you did get accepted at Mich, would you go there?

Also, are you an Indian citizen? I am not sure how the Co-Op works for internationals. From what i've heard, the co-op eats into the OPT ( practice training ) time and this is not good if you graduate and go job hunting, you will not be able to work unless the company is willing to sponsor your H1 visa immediately..

depends i dono
umich is good school but living in new york, I dono if I would study that far
One field which Umich has huge advantage over NU is in Business, if you have been admitted in the pre-ross admit, then Umich mite be the better pick

I am most likely going to NU. I like the atmosphere and the campus feel it has

Are you living in India currently?

I've been living in the US for the past few years...

I agree that NU has a great atmosphere/campus but Michigan's programs are in the top 10 :(

true Umich is known for that
but then again you have to tak in consideration that when you apply to Michigan, you are not applying to a specific program in most cases, but rather to the school itself (esp in business). From there you would need a high GPA and compete for a spot at the program.
NU is getting up there but still way behind UMich, you can always go to NU first year then transfer. Around you, you have schools like MIT, BC, Harvard and more. PLus NU got better looking girls from what i hear ;)
NU has a Bhangra team which is pretty decent. The social life aspect of NU and esp being in Boston is something also to consider.

I was waitlisted at UMich as a high school senior and matriculated at NEU this past year, but was accepted as a transfer to UMich's Sport Management program, so I'm probably headed there next year. My advice is that if you're intent on going to UMich, study at a school that has lower tuition (like a SUNY) and then apply transfer there. It's easier to get into UMich OOS as a transfer compared to a first-year applicant.

I have met a few kids from India but not too many who are American-born and of Indian descent(although one of my friends is Indian & from NYC and has joined a sorority which has other Indian-Americans). To be honest, NEU really isn't too diverse, especially compared to the other schools you mention in NY state.

Also, if you're doing the 4-year program with coop, you only do one coop, not two. The 5-year is best because it costs the same and you get three coops as opposed to just one.
