Well today was my only chance to pass my driving test, but I failed because I forgot to look over my shoulder once when it was important... the ONLY time I forgot it was important. Well it was important because it was a bike lane, but w/e. lol...

To get to the question. Is there a DMV in Berkeley? I scheduled an appointment for April 22nd at Oakland. Is that the closest one? I really need my license before my permit expires.

And don't come in here to make fun of the fact that I don't have my license yet because that's rude and I already had tons of that from other people.

lol hey don't worry, I don't have my liscence yet either. I don't know the answer to your question though--I live in Fresno. But reply is here for moral support. :P

no
theres one in el cerrito though......which is like a 10 minute drive from campus.

do u mean aug 22nd? and i think theres a DMV in El Cerrito and 2 in Oakland.. they should all be pretty close... and I went to one of the Oakland ones recently, and it was packed.. although all DMVs are very busy, I thought this one was especially.. but u probably wont have a problem cuz u have an appointment

Good luck on your next test, but dont worry about not having a license. You'll be surprised to see how many ppl dont have a license, i mean most ppl do, but a lot dont. And ppl wont look down on you for not having one. Just make sure you at least have a california id.

Yeah, I'm almost 19, and my second driving permit is going to expire. Most people at Berkeley use BART at the university's expense anyway.

im in the same boat as you, but im taking the test for the first time next week

Having a license at Berkeley is completely immaterial. Very, very few people drive while at school anyway (parking is a pain, and can be expensive, and since the public transportation is so good, driving is generally unnecessary). It wouldn't be any loss to wait until next summer to get your license if you don't have the time this summer.

Wow your examiner is a d*ck.

The university doesnt pay for bart, only AC transit, but its still a good way to get around if you plan on going out of berkeley.

yea. Thanks people. I'm going to use public transportation, but I still need one if I'm planning on driving up here next semester or even next year.

So should I go to the El Cerrito one and cancel my Oakland one? I scheduled it for the 22nd because it's during welcome week and that's when I still have some driving skills left in me.

Will you have access to a car for the test on other days? Because you have to keep in mind that it may be easier to drive in el cerrito than it is in oakland. But if you only have a car on the 22nd, then you need to keep your appointment.

M1st3rmarbl3s, my advice, whatever you do, is get some experience driving wherever you're going to have the test. Even driving around El Cerrito or Oakland once will probably result in a better performance on the test. Best of luck on the test. :)

What are road tests like in Cali? I know at least in NJ, there was this tiny enclosed area where we drive in so we don't interact with "real" drivers on the road. They make us do simple left and right turns, basic parallel parking, and that's about it. It's so easy to get a license in NJ :)

Yeah, in california we actually interact with the "real" drivers.

take your test in San Francisco city if you can. they don't test parallel parking in the city for some crazy reason.

They don't test parallel parking in California, period. They test you backing up along a curb, but that's a close as it gets. You should be within 18" of the curb and cannot hit the curb (though I've heard some are lenient on this point).

And if you did the driving test in SF, it wouldn't surprise me that you couldn't find a place to parallel park anyway, knowing how packed those streets generally are.

Eek, I would avoid SF like the plague with regard to driving in it.

hmm.. I wouldn't think SF is the best place to test in.. I know someone who failed right as she got out of the DMV because she turned the wrong way on a one way street..

the EXACT same thing happened to my friend. they failed her for not looking over her shoulder with enough emphasis, lol.

she's going to berkeley too and she scheduled her next test for the friday of labor day weekend, but it's gonna be really tight for her to train home right after class and get to the DMV around here.

best of luck.
