DNA test

Apologies if this has come up and I missed it, but – son received a “kit” for DNA testing to be done prior to I-day and a letter which says follow the directions on the card in the kit. But there don’t appear to be any directions on this card. It does tell you what it’s used for – which I’d rather not repeat. Has anyone figured this one out yet?

So they tell you exactly what the test will be used for, but not how to do it? I haven't gotten that, so I don't know anything about it, but I am curious as to what it is used for.

Well Patriot, it's to identify ones remains should the worst happen. :(

Ah, I see. Makes sense, I guess. Hopefully they won't ever have to use these DNA samples...

I called the medical office and was told that you're just supposed to bring it on I-day, then their lab personnel will actually do the deed.

However, I'd like a confirm on this because, as you, I read it and thought "What directions?"

If you called the medical office then I'd say it's a safe bet to go with what they said, but then again there was that fingerprint confusion...

What fingerprint confusion? Do we need prints?

Anything you don't do they'll take care of, but I want to get it all done pre I-day for an easier transition.

I just wish they'd coordinate things a little better. I understand there's a lot to do, but it's still somewhat frustrating.

No, not this year. This is a change TacticalNuke. There was some confusion at the first orientation because fingerprints were required in the past, but they made it clear: fingerprints are taken electronically at the academy during inprocessing-- no need to do anything in advance. I'm positive on this one!

yeah...i was being a little snide...the prints will be taken care of. It's just that nobody seems to know what anybody else is doing there...did we send the print cards or not??? If they think they get confused they should try being on the recieving end. How are we supposed to know what to do if they give us contradicting information?

...rant over...

Seriously...

like the instance where in the P.O. box packet it said "do not get any immunizations before I-day" then at orientation they said "get immunizations if possible" then they send out information that says "immunizations are required" while in that same packet it says "if you don't get them before you'll be in pain on I-day".

I have a lot of positives though. The academic departments are very helpful in terms of answering questions. Also, my admissions counselor, Sharon Jones, was a God-send.

You'd think, though, that they'd be able to send everything out at once so I don't constantly have to worry about missing one of the thousand or so mailings.

You are so right TacNuke, but I'm guessing that's probably a first taste of what military life may be life ;)

...yeah LOTS of paperwork...with a little confusion thrown in just to make things interesting

I'm starting to think that this is our first lesson on teamwork. We need to communicate with each other in order to get organized. But, maybe i'm just skeptical.

Good point, solar.

I don't know what I'd do without this website.

Well, I suppose if they say bring it in then we shouldn't do anyting until I-day. BUT, why on earth would they send the kit out in the first place if all you're supposed to do is bring it BACK to the Academy unopened?? Doesn't this sound just a little bit insane??? ;)

That's what I thought, which is why I recommend someone confirm.

I was planning on getting a narrow (1") binder and put closing report pocket inserts on the 3 rings (or a narrow trapper keeper). This will help organize ALL the paperwork that needs to be hand carried to I-Day. This will prevent paperwork from falling out of the binder. Call me obsessive! It certainly helped with the application process. Keep in mind, you will be carrying IMPORTANT documents (Birth Certificate, Passport, Prescriptions, x-ray films, etc....).

I'll be carrying two binders. One will be my academic progress from college and the other an important papers binder.

AFDAD2010-
You said we are supposed to bring the kit back unopened?? I went with the directions and opened the kit and filled it out like the directions said. I kept everything else. Was I wrong in doing this??
In my opinion they sent us the kit because the card inside must be filled out in a certain fashion. Meaning, the letters and numbers must go around two dots a certain way to prevent confusion. When I did this it took a long time so maybe this is why they sent it out early. Just my take...
