Do admissions look at your GPA per grade or cumulatively?

Also is it true that your junior year GPA is the most important?

Ask your counselor to see your transcript. That’ll be what the college will see. Also, as to whether Junior year is most important? All I can say is that its definitely not an insignificant factor

I have heard that some schools don’t consider freshmen grades while others do. My understanding is that the schools look for an upward trend in the grades, and consistency.

If the grades take a dive, they would need a reasonable explanation as to why this happened. Illness, death in the family, parental divorce, etc, are all things that can be taken into account.

I’ve heard that many colleges recompute your gpa all together before the adcom sees your application, that way it can be more standardized and easier to compare to other students who applied. This can mean they take out Freshman year grades, electives, weight it differently, etc. They say junior year is most important because it gives the best indication of how you are currently performing, since many colleges won’t see your senior year grades when considering your application. But it’s not everything, just like how if you had completely terrible grades freshman and sophomore year, but a 4.0 junior year, you still aren’t getting into any Ives.
