Hello! I'm a Sophomore at UCI and my AP credit from high school got me out of taking Chem 1A, the first class in the General Chem series at Irvine. (Irvine doesn't let you take that class if you got a 4 or 5 on the AP test... I got a 4). I did, however, take Chem 1B and 1C, and got A's in them. When I apply for med school, should I be worried that not taking Chem 1A will hurt me?

Won’t matter in the slightest as long as you meet the “letter of the law” of the requirements (which admittedly might have changed since when I applied). That generally means 1 year of gen chem with lab, 1 year of Ochem with lab, etc. etc. If UCI is on semesters, you’d be set with just 1B and 1C. We were on the quarter system at UCLA, and I think we got a bit of a pass with some of the requirements, as the Gen chem and Ochem series was only 4 classes (14A through 14D), so technically only did 2/3 of a year of each, but I completed the series that was available at my school and no med schools ever questioned it.

Thank you soo much!! UCI is on the quarter system too (3 quarters a school year)-- so I did 2/3 too! And do you also know the requirements for math? I did Calc AB and BC in high school (both 5’s) so I only need to do Stats at UCI.

You’ll need a year of “college-level mathematics” - some med schools specify calculus, but many don’t. You’ll probably need to take two more math classes (preferably calculus) because many med schools won’t accept APs for pre-req credit.

Check each medical school’s policy on AP credit. For some, you may have to add a more advanced course in the subject to substitute for the introductory level course that you skipped with AP credit.

Check wiht your pre-med advisor and adcoms of Med. Schools on your list.
