We just feel so sad about the fact that there’s no aid available to int’l kids. Please understand that the last time a Chinese kid got in with FA was in 2008. Are Chinese kids way worse than applicants from boardingschool’s country? No!!!
So, you’re not in our situation. You won’t understand. Boardingschool must have seen so many amazing kids being turned down by all the schools just because they applied for aid as int’ls. Not her fault!

But boardingschool,
No one gets in simply because of “hooks”. They need to have stellar grades, ECs, etc for the first place. You wouldn’t have been admitted if you had had a 1800 SAT, right? Being an URM in America means that you’ll get less attention in society(my assumption). Life isn’t easy for anyone.
I guess Exie got upset because she heard too much about advantages of being an URM. But seriously, how much do we know about the way they admit kids? Does it help THAT much? I’d say it’s more like a plus. If you fall into the “not so likely to be admitted” category and then there’s a spot available—they’ll take you! BUT, by that time, they’ve already sent acceptance letters to TONS of fabulous people, URM and non-URM.

Everything happens for a reason.

And it’s a bit mean of you(boardingschool), to say “oh no chance unless you have a major hook” even before the OP makes up his/her mind. We all know the truth is sad(no FA for us), but why discourage people?
[you make me feel bad…it’s SO likely that I’ll be rejected at all the schools next year…]

Here on CC, are we talking about hooks too much? Do 99% of the student body actually have one? There are a lot of misonceptions and assumptions.

I never said or even hinted that “you can get in just because of hook”. Jesus, why do people keep interpreting in their own biased way? On other threads, I always said that “your chance would increase if…”, not “you certainly will get in if…” There have been studies and research showing that your chance would increase if you have hook, the paper I posted above is just one of them (none of you even bothered to read). It’s true we talk about hooks too often on CC, but you’re always welcome to argue for the opposite. There’re already many threads about hooks and affirmative action, I’d suggest you all go there and express your opinions. This thread and my post did not mean to be among them.

This whole discussion was based on intentional misinterpretation laden with personal attack (building up the racism story even though you know we’re talking about an international student, “glad they all rejected you because you’re poor, hope you fail at your new school, etc.” Geez, how immature can one get?) Once you started personal attack, the discussion will get very nasty, so we’d better stop here.

Your quote: “They do care. Unless you’re minority/athlete/international contest winner,…”

Which implies that Adcom’s do not care about low grades if you fit the image above. And here - in the United States the word “minority” means African American, Latino and Native American.

So you were out of line and rude.

It may be tough for all categories of students but quoting us chapter and verse from other “posts” on College Confidential shows how little research you do. And then deciding that my own experience as an interviewer is trumped by the tiny amount of knowledge you came by in so short a time - a skewed view. I posted a response to your post because a lot of people come here looking for reliable information - not snarky comments from a kid who doesn’t know any more than the person asking the question. An expert on this topic - you are not.

I took real interest in a post you made about another group in March of this year that went like this:

or one of my favorites from March (in which you expound on your vast knowledge of US school and work culture):

or this classic boardingschool post to another student requesting help (in April):

Let me help you a bit, although I doubt you’ll listen. If (and I suspect it isn’t going to happen based on your own posts about being waitlisted or rejected from 10 schools) you come here as a BS student - a visitor to the US, maybe learn a bit more about the culture and learn some manners. Otherwise you’re going to have a bumpy ride and a lonely existence.

@ExieMITAlum slash dramaqueen: Thanks, I lived in US for longer than you think. Everyone understood my posts in their context and no one ever complained. I don’t know why you keep launching vicious attack against me, but I feel sorry for you sitting there all day stalking on internet and creating drama. This is very nasty and unhealthy. If you see problem with my posts, simply report them to the site admin or send me PM. You’re going more and more off-topic here.

To the rest of you - I apologize. Please realize that my daughter has taken the brunt of assumptions like this including rude behavior by visiting students and parents – and so have others on the board who don’t post.

I’m quitting this thread - but my concern remains. Show some sensitivity when posting assumptions about “who” has an advantage and who doesn’t. Because an Adcom isn’t going to tell you for a number of privacy reasons.

The stereotypes who appear to have an advantage often have surprising credentials that you won’t see and they have to jump through more hoops just to prove they’re just as good because of existing prejudice.

But who DOES get an advantage would surprise you - it isn’t the people you think or post about.

I planned to ignore when I was attacked the 1st time, but when dramaqueen kept going on to the 2nd time, I had to fight back. Age obviously doesn’t come with wisdom or maturity. I’m glad ExieMITAlum decided to stop his/her rude behavior. Peace from now!

@ilovethattree: Is that a visual art class? In my class, my teacher gives grade based on effort. So you do have to put a lot of time in the class to get A But as long as you comply, you should be fine.

Boardingschool, thanks so much!!! (haha for all the help you gave me)

ExieMITAlum, you can come and see how hard it is for a Chinese to get aid, compared with those from boardingschool’s country. Being an URM does help a lot!

Okay I can just shut up.
Sorry boardingschool, I might misread something as I’m on my iPod which sucks at typing and stuff.

Thanks gonnastop. You see, having this kind of vicious stalker is exactly the reason why I don’t want to reveal where I live or which school I go to on this forum. Who knows what they may do, what lies they may spread. Finally this thread can rest in peace…

Anyway, I’ll be around until school starts Gluck with everything.

Thanks!! Yeah I don’t like this “search posts” function. Makes me feel weird!!! They got all the stalkers around and people know you better than your real friends do…

Most of us don’t look at the “search” function. In this case I used it to see if the opinions expressed here are part of a pattern. And posting clips of prior “rants” apparently didn’t serve as an appropriate warning for the person to clean up her act.

Word to the wise (students looking for credible information about the BS process) - What you do and say in cyber space never goes away, even if you delete an account. And since many Adcom’s and interviewers have access to the posts - it’s not hard to match a student with a long post trail to a BS application/profile.

If you’re rejected or waitlisted at a number of schools - it may not be for reasons stated (FA, intl, etc), it may just be that they didn’t like what they saw (or read) and you got the “easy” excuse.

But to each his/her own. Good luck with that.
