My question is, how much weight is placed on college extracurriculars, such as club leadership, when it comes to applying for jobs? Are things like formal research and internships more important?

Thanks for any info!

They are all important, but generally speaking, internship experience is probably the most important.

The ec’s will come in handy in the interview more than the app. They’re the well you draw on to answer questions like, “tell me about a time when you encountered conflict in making a group decision and how you worked through that.” If you don’t have an actual work experience that’s a good example, you can talk about how you had to bring different groups in your club together to decide how to allocate the club’s budget, for example.

Leadership positions and the different things you undertake as some (worthwhile) clubs/ECs teach you different skills.

That’s important.
