Do colleges care about Latin?

Just wondering; seems that very few people take the SAT Latin subject test. Is Latin something that colleges don't care too much about? I have already taken math 2 and chemistry and got 800 on both. Would Latin be a good choice for the third one (demonstrating humanities stuff) if I got at least 750? Or would something like Lit or US Hist be better?

I'd say you should take the test you're most likely to score highest on. I would think that what you score is more important than what subject you choose.

Latin and Lit and Hist are equally good. just pick the one you want. It generally doesn't matter what subjects you choose, as long as (like you said) you pick a variety of subject (math, sciece, humanities).
I think the reason Latin is unpopular is that not manyhigh schools offer Latin and people generally don't care much about Latin. No offense, but what's Latin good for? You can learn roots and grammer just as well by taking Spanish.

Thanks for your comments. John, I agree that I am never going to "speak" Latin, but truly, the roots and understanding of the "construction" of language and style are only fully gained from doing Latin. Plus, Latin the source of all the Romance languages... good Latin students can get the gist of Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese by knowing their Latin.

I agree. I take latin and Italian, and I know French fluently. Latin, if you have a good teacher, is the best language decision you can make because it makes you aware of the way we speak and why, for example, you say "I kick the ball" but the "ball kicks ME".

A more profound understanding and mastery of English grammar.
Also, it's a lot more rewarding to read the great classical works in their original language.
You probably don't read much. Or write as well as you think you do.

Latin was one of my three SAT IIs.
It's a cakewalk, and I took it after my second year of Latin.
The reason it's an unpopular test is because many people who take Latin suck at it.

In truth, Latin is the easiest of languages, relative to Germanic and Romance Languages, in regard to its structured quality and its simplicity.

It's probably unpopular bcos fewer and fewer HS even offer it. But, to answer your question -- yes, a high score on a humanities/language Subject Test is excellent to balance out the math-science. Lit/History/Language -- it won't much matter.

Are you taking an AP test in a language before you graduate? If not, take Latin. It can exempt you from language requirements in college (if you want that).
