Do colleges check the leadership position really deeply?

I heard you can kinda exaggerate about the position you held in club but does college really look at those deeply during the process?

“Kinda exaggerate” is another way of saying “lie.”

Don’t do it. Have the self respect to apply as you are. I’m sure there are a million reasons why a college would want you. Don’t lie to invent more.

Nobody cares that you were president of Model UN, FCA or the Latin Club.

Ethically, should you lie/exaggerate on your application? No. You should represent yourself as you are. You can represent yourself in the best light (ie there are certain ways of phrasing things that sound better) but you should not lie. Practically, you probably could exaggerate a bit. For example, most colleges are not going to call your GC and verify all your activities.

However, if you make an outlandish claim (such as being published, earning a lot of money for charity), they might check that.

I heard of one case in which two kids applying to the same college both listed themselves as the sole organizer of the same fairly large fundraiser that was actually founded by a group of several students at my school. The school they applied to was a small, selective liberal arts school, and the college did end up calling our school, and they were both rejected after their claims of both being the sole founder were proven incorrect. I don’t know how true this is, as I heard it from an upperclassman about a year ago, but I would still advise you not to take the risk. I know I’m not.

The great thing about application decisions is you never really know why or why not. Whoever suggested the strategy has no evidence for or against the practice…they just assume it’s possible and worthwhile.

Chance are you won’t get caught, but I honestly doubt that’ll be the difference in your applications.
