Do colleges give you an @[college].edu email?

I have a friend who is a senior at Amherst. His email is [name]@amherst.edu

Do all universities do this? Or only some? Or is it because he might be in some sort of program?

Just curious :)

I think all colleges do this. My email address is [name]@umich.edu

Yeah, all colleges do.

Sometimes if you get involved with research or your major you will get an @department.college.edu

haha, thats so cool. I had no idea, thanks.

I know people having their past graduated college’s email addresses. A lawyer I know still has and uses an email address at Columbia law school for her personal use. I think some colleges provide email address and access to their mail sever for alumni.
My S, a HS rising senior got an email address at stanford.edu because he is enrolled in one of their online HS courses. It’s cool.:)

Mine is firstname.lastname@dartmouth.edu . Some schools add silly stuff to the domain name though like University of Alabama is name@mybama.ua.edu or something like that

Duke assigns you two letters and numbers @ duke.edu

ie ab12@duke.edu, then you get to pick another email address (same address linked) Aaron.Brooks@Duke.edu

JH gives you first initial f and first 6 letters of last name followed by a number so flastna1@jhu.edu. Also thrown in are flastna1@johnshopkins.edu and flastna1@jesmail.johnshopkins.edu/email. You can also choose up to 4 other emails @jhu or @jhmi.edu

Case Western gave me an e-mail before I even got a decision letter. I thought that was pretty cool.

South Carolina’s are [name]@mailbox.sc.edu

Notice that people who posted up their [Name]@{Domain}.edu are only domains of top schools lol

You need a school email in order to join said school’s network on Facebook, lol. And there are Facebook networks for so many random schools that I’ve never heard of that have members… having emails isn’t just something that top schools have, I don’t think.

Penn emails include the specific school in which you are enrolled. I’ve seen this with WashU emails too. For instance, I’m [PennKey]@sas.upenn.edu for the School of Arts & Sciences. You get to choose what your PennKey is from eight-ish options, with are all different combinations of initials/first name/last name/etc. :)

Yup.

I took a summer class at the local CC and my email was: initials@mymail.schoolname.edu. My email for the school I’m actually attending is: lastnamefirstinitial@stu.schoolname.edu. Cornell does initialsxyz@cornell.edu.

Brown gives you [first][last]@brown.edu and up to five-linked aliases. After you graduate you lose the box, but can use [first][last]@alumni.brown.edu as a forwarding address indefinitely.

Mine lets you choose whatever you want for your @vt.edu email address.

I’m pretty sure all schools do it to just make things easier. At my community college they assigned firstname_lastname@…

I transfred to Rutger’s and they actually let you pick your username (although most use some combination of their first/last name or initials).

I think that larger colleges are more likely to let you pick your own since your first_last combination is more likely to have been taken. I got lucky and guy firstinitialmiddleinitiallastname though.

Haverford uses the first letter of your first name, then your last name.

e.g.: John Doe

jdoe@haverford.edu

Sonoma normally uses last name and, if necessary, a few letters of your first name @sonoma.edu. I’m lucky enough that it’s just my last name, but I know a few of my friends have some weird combinations.
