Do colleges know your PSAT score, etc, when sending you mail?

I'm a junior this year and since sophomore year, when I took the PSAT, I've been receiving a lot of mail from colleges. I've heard that they don't have access to students' test scores, but I just received an email from Carthage saying, "Your PSAT results and self-reported GPA tell us that you’re a great candidate for admission," and that made me wonder if that's not really the case. I score a 299 sophomore year and a 230 this year, and while I've been getting mail from a variety of colleges, lately a lot more have been upper-tier schools like UChicago and WashingtonU. So I guess my question is, do colleges know your test stats/other personal information when they send you mail?

They do not know your score, but they know the range. They might buy a list from CB and they want everyone who scored over a certain score, who shows interest in a certain area, etc…

Be prepared for a deluge of mail in the next year. That box you checked saying you would like colleges to contact you? it should have said "Would you like to kill a tree? But, remember, you are just a name on a list, a very long list. They care more about your application than they do about you. Do not assume someone there has taken an interest in you, personally. You are a strong candidate, and apply to the schools you think would suit you.

Ha, yeah, I get so much mail from them sometimes. So they DO know your rough score? That’s interesting, given that I remember reading on a CB publications that those aren’t released. Not that I’m complaining; I’m enjoying looking through the mail and learning more about colleges that I wouldn’t otherwise have known about.

They aren’t specifically told that you are John Doe and your score is 230, but if they bought the scores of all students above 220, your name and info was there and they know that you got over 220. So they know a rough range, but not specifically on a student by student basis.
And yeah, mail can be a good way to get info about schools you mightn’t have heard of. Good luck in the upcoming college search!! :D

299 is mad impressive considering its out of 240…

Alright, thanks for the info, everyone! I thought CB wasn’t allowed to sell score info, but whatever. haha.

^You sign off on a thing that allows them to give your name to colleges and programs.
