Do Colleges Look at Quarter & Semester Grades?

Question: My child’s high school gives quarter and semester grades. Do colleges just look at just the end-of-semester grades or at all grades? Most high schools put all grades on the transcript that goes to colleges; some high schools, however, will put only the final grade for each course.
Our school only reports the semester grades - the transcripts do not show a final overall grade. So if a student got a C in semester 1 it shows C. Then, if they get a B in semester 2 for the same class it shows a B. There is nothing to indicate which grade was predominate overall for the course.

How do you think colleges look at that type of situation?

I think that in most cases, the colleges will treat this like two separate grades. In other words, if a student gets a C in American History in Semester 1 and a B in Semester 2, the college would treat it like a C in History Part I and a B in History Part II. Presumably, this is how the high school also handles the GPA … the C and the B would be fed into the average and counted as two grades.

However, during the subjective part of the process, the improvement from the C to the B would probably also be noted and discussed.

Yes, that makes sense. Thanks so much!
