Do colleges receive PSAT scores without sending?

My kid hasn't received her PSAT scores yet (big public school...they're going to give them out sometime in January) but she received a 210 as a sophomore and likely did better as a a junior this year. Over the last few days, she's received a good number of college mailings that start out as "Based on your PSAT scores, we know you're interested in an intellectual community where yada yada" and I'm just curious: Do all colleges have access to these scores (or does College Board have a list of, say, all takers over 200 and they sell it to colleges?). Or is it just a shot in the dark that colleges send to all students?

CB sells the names (with, presumably, score ranges) and your kid gets the mailings if s/he opted in to receive them.

thx OhMom…that’s really interesting.

Follow-up question, they don’t do this with SATs, right?

Yes they do.

…and they were sued for selling a little too much info, apparently:

Both SAT and ACT scores are used for targeted mailing/emailing campaigns by colleges. You will be inundated with mail/email if your student does well. However, it can be an interesting way to learn about schools you hadn’t thought about before so take it for what it’s worth.
