I've taken 5 years of french, 2 in middle school (they appear on my transcript under courses done prior to 9th grade) and 3 in high school. Some of the elite schools that I'm looking into say they want 4 years of a language, but does that include my 2 years in middle school? I don't really want to take AP French if I can take another science instead.... Merci!

If your two classes in middle school counted toward high school credit (here, they do, but I could be mistaken about how it is where you live), then you do not have to worry. If not, four years are generally not REQUIRED … it is just a recommendation ! : )

Usually, they mean 4 years done in high school. But if you complete the highest level language course in, say, your junior year, I’m sure they’ll understand why you won’t be taking a senior year language class.

ok, thanks!
