Do I absolutely *need* three recommendations?

I'm talking about MIT/CalTech.

I can only think of two teachers who wouldn't say I'm a lazy bastard, and my counselor quit last year. So does 2 recs work? One is math, one is science. Idk that I need a humanities one for IT's.

Post please.

2 is good enough. if the third's going to make your application suffer, DO NOT have an extra.

You do need 2 teacher AND one counselor rec if that's what the school requires. Don't send extra unless they really add something to your application.

Almost every school requires a counselor rec / secondary school report, plus either one or two teacher recs.

You may be taking the laziness thing a bit too far. Caltech and MIT are extremely selective schools, and you would be well advised to take the application process seriously. For starters - go to their websites and see what you need to apply. Both schools want one of the recs to be from a humanties class.

I would also email or call them to see how to handle the lack of counselor. The counselor form is different from the teacher recs. I t has info about your school and how you fit into it.
