Do I have a chance at Emory or Wake Forest?

I'm applying for transfer for the Fall of 2011 for Emory and Wake Forest. I want to major/minor in a combination of International Relations/Middle East Studies/Arabic/Political Science (depending on the school)

Accepted: I've gotten into the University of Texas, American SIS Honors, and William & Mary. I'm having to turn down the latter two because neither school met more than 50% of my need. I can afford to go to UT but... I honestly don't like the school very much.

Rejected: Cornell (I wrote terrible essays), Brandeis (uh... not sure why?)

Waiting: Vanderbilt - CAS, George Washington - Elliot, Georgetown - SFS, Fordham - MES

Stats:

A.Transfer Notes:
- Applying for Financial Aid/FAFSA EFC is 0
- Transferring from a relatively small, unknown LAC. USNEWS says it's a "tier one" institution.
- I am in the Honors program at my LAC

B.High School Academics, Notable Feats, and Important Notes:

Final High School GPA: 3.7

College credits by the time of graduation: 36 hours/4.0 GPA (took 17 hours in the Fall, 19 in the Spring)

Accepted into Phi Theta Kappa while in high school

Deans list at the community college the entire time I was there

I've got some extensive ECs, volunteer work, and clear examples of positive character. I'll post here if requested.

SAT: ~1900. (Took it two-three years ago)

I went to two high schools. I was dismissed during my Sophomore year from the first one. I transferred to a private high school that did not offer any Honors/AP courses. I helped create a dual-credit program at the school that allowed me to go to a community college four days of the week. I was able to complete 36 credits of an Associates in the Arts my senior year of high school. ALL classes were on-campus and alongside real college students.

C .College Academics and Important Notes:
- Cumulative GPA: 3.93 GPA with 99 credits.

I took 27 credit hours in the Summer before this Fall. I achieved a 4.0 in the summer and completed my Associates in the Arts with highest honors. I was admitted into my LAC as a Freshmen applicant but have now achieved Senior status. I had a 4.0 GPA up until this semester, where I got two B's. My school is on the normal unweighted scale, but they were extremely high B's. I was under a lot of outside pressure that I will explain in my essay. I've always taken the most rigorous and hardest course load available to me, and have always taken between 18-27 hours per semester.

Lay it on me, guys. Do I have a chance? I really don't want to go to UT, and I've been heart broken ever since I turned down W&M. I know Emory has great financial aid and I've heard Wake Forest is pretty decent with aid.

Thanks.

I think you have a nice shot. Your GPA is great, and Wake Forest doesn’t even care about SATs anyway.

Thank you. Honestly, I’m just freaked out about my high school disciplinary record. How much weight would these more selective schools put on it?

63 of which were earned during my senior year in high school. They’re inside an Associates in the Arts. They’re core classes, etc. I know that I’ve got a lot of credits, but I know that only 60 will transfer (if that). I called both schools and they told me that they’ll use the number of credits that I have to outweigh high school, but it won’t be held against me.

EDIT: Oh also, I have three AWESOME recommendations.

Don’t give up on Vandy!!! Have you been in contact with them recently?

They had a couple questions about my disciplinary record from high school. They haven’t contacted me or replied to my inquiries since.

Alas, such is life.

What, if you don’t mind me asking, was the cause of your dismissal? What it was could have a big impact on whether they’re going to care or not.

caligulashorse, check your inbox.

how are you applying to emory and WF this late? i transferred to emory and i had to get my application submitted by january.

anyway, i think you have a good shot at both. i have about the same stats as you (but 2100 on SATs, and a clean record) and i got waitlisted to WF when i was applying for freshman year. when i transferred (started emory at beginning of soph year), i applied to UGA, Emory, Furman, UNC, Elon and UVA and got in everywhere. i ended up liking emory way more than WF so i didn’t bother applying to WF as a transfer. Emory is not that great with financial aid to be honest (at my last school i got around 10,000 a year for good academics and at Emory i get nothing). also, i’m pretty sure emory only lets you transfer in 60 credits and it seems like you have a lot more than that

i hope you get into Emory of WF! i’m sure you will. coming to emory as a transfer was extremely easy, and if you get the chance, try to join greek life! it really helped me out with meeting people.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but from what I understand: Emory’s transfer deadline is June 1st, with decision typically mailing 2-5 weeks after the application is complete. Wake Forest’s application review began April 1st, with rolling admission until the class is full. I called and was told that they’re still accepting applications. I’ll call once more before I hit submit.

Congrats on all those acceptances! What was your FAFSA EFC, if you don’t mind me asking? I figured I would qualify for the Emory Advantage since my family made about $24,000 last year and I have an EFC of 0. Also, I know that only 60 credits will transfer (if that).

Thanks again, and I’ll be working non-stop the next couple of days on my Emory application. Honestly, it’s more or less my only hope or else it’s onto UT.

oh, i’m sorry! i guess they accepted the applications starting in january or something… :)

i’m not sure about my FAFSA information. my parents do that stuff for me, but i think i don’t get any aid because my dad makes over 200k annually (i’m not trying to brag but i just wanted to tell you that emory isn’t trying to screw me over or anything). i have some friends who have gotten a lot of financial aid here though… i hope it all works out for you! let me know if you have any other questions

@GG: I think you have an awesome shot at Emory & WF. You have great stats  Especially Emory. According to their school newspaper the “Emory Wheel” they’ve been targeting transfers lately.trying to attract more transfer students. I’m pretty sure Emory gives out good financial aid for transfer students. My EFC=0 just like you and in the future I hope I can transfer to Emory or UPENN so tell me how your financial aid package is if you get in. :)

Btw can you pm me why you got in trouble in HS for? I’m sure the adcoms should be able to see that you’re much more mature now and hopefully can see past it …

@emory12

No worries. I should be done with the application in a couple days, and then I should know by the end of June :D

Thanks! I PM’ed you.
