Do I have a chance at georgia tech or UGA?

I'm going to be in my senior year next year. So far I have taken zero ap classes but next year i'm planning to take ap econ, ap chemistry and ap calculus. I also did all honors in freshman year and did pretty badly in them at the beginning but improved later. In sophmore and junior year i did all regular classes except for honors biology and chemistry and I had a solid A in both of them.

My current gpa is 3.5. I'm hoping the ap classes can boost them up to around 3.8 (is that possible?)

am asian indian though i have a hispanic sounding last name and i heard that georgia tech places a higher bar to hispanic/african american students. also, know an filipino friend that did poorly in high school but got into georgia tech because he left the race box unchecked and tech assumed he was hispanic because of his surname.

live in the atlanta area (also heard georgia tech favors people applying from georgia more)

I have a lot of volunteer hours, well over 200, mostly at libraries and at cleaning trash from the streets. I have also worked part time at a convenience store in the summer.

my sat was 2015 (coincidentally i'm in the class of 2015 also lol) and my act was 31.

right now i'm not looking too good as a future freshman by looking at their requirements and it has me worried. i really screwed up not taking more honors classes or ap classes and it's biting me back hard now :(

oh and i’ve also been in 8 clubs so far in my high school.

Hmmmm. This is tough. So your SAT and ACT are strong, especially for UGA, but your GPA and course rigor is on the lower side… The volunteer hours is great, but you seem to be lacking leadership…? I see that you’re in 8 clubs but thats not what colleges are looking for. They want committed students in a smaller number of clubs that are active. Being hispanic is a plus for sure but idk… I’d conclude low reach-high match UGA and reach Tech. best of luck<3

not hispanic, asian indian here which i think hurts my chances a little more :frowning: and yes i’ve always been an introvert my parents and teachers always pushed me to do more social/leadership activities but i’ve always shunned them away. guess that’s also coming to bite me back lol.

How is your SAT score a 2015? I thought scores were only in 10 pt increments. Anyway, Tech will be a little harder to get into than UGA. GPAs are similar but a big difference is test scores. What were your section scores? Tech is a tech school so they place a large emphasis on math and they don’t use the science or reading sections of the ACT in their recalculation of your score. You’re right about Tech “favoring” students from GA kind of. They’re a public school in the University System of Georgia so a certain percent (51% I think?) of applicants they accept have to be from GA. As for setting a higher bar for people from a certain race, I’m not entirely sure but I don’t think that would be allowed lol. Colleges definitely value diversity, however, and being an under-represented race (African-American) may aid in the admissions process, while being an over-represented race (ie Asian, Caucasian) may not do you any favors because there are so many qualified applicants. Being from GA you’ve already got one advantage and it would help if you were female (generally under-represented at tech schools). Their application process is holistic (they look at everything about you, not just scores and grades) so definitely apply. You never know!

@z0e101‌ yes i got a little confused with my sat score it is actually 2020 not 2015 and my sat scores are split into the following:

Critical Reading 620 84%
Math 680 90%
Writing 720 97%
Multiple Choice 71 (score range: 20-80)
Essay 9 (score range: 2-12)

as you can see it is really a mess of variability.
