I am a current sophomore in high school, and I wanted to know if I have a chance given my circumstances. My grades and by extension my gpa is and will be mediocre in all of my required classes. I will have taken the extra theater practicum elective every year either one or both semesters, and I will have taken chorus 10-12th grade. next year I am going to take AP government, and probably will get a c/b in the class, and I will also take a theater elective which i will most likely ace. as a senior, I am going to take physics and calculus (and ill probably do mediocre/badly) and two theater/art electives and ill do well in those. I will also be taking one or two theater college courses each semester (so that will be 2-4 total) at the community college my high school is affiliated with (and i get credit!!!). for SATs, I will probably get in the range of 1300-1500 if I really study hard, and Im not sure if I am taking SAT subject tests either (but i probably wont do great) I have a lot of extra curriculars, but the big things that will stand out is taking a college audition prep class at stella adler (a studio that is affiliated with NYU tisch drama) and at least one student film (this one in particular is not at nyu, but Im hoping to get into this other nyu film, but that could go either way so Im not counting on it. I am also continuing to audition for short films at nyu and other schools so if i do that will probably look good but who knows?) NYU is definitely my dream school (and cost isn’t a factor for this particular school, I would get free/partially free tuition at NYU)
no one can chance you without your GPA and test scores. no one can really chance you even with a GPA and test scores because admission to Tisch relies heavily on your audition, and we don’t know how that will go.
It’s almost impossible to say whether or not you’ll be admitted to Tisch drama because they really only care about your audition (they of course look at your other things such as grades, test scores, and essays but they’re not as big a deal as they are for other schools). They’re going to be looking for all types of people and what they’re looking for will change some from year to year so the best thing you can do at this point is do well in school and continue to get better at and get more experience with acting.
If you can afford it/are interested I recommend looking into the Tisch High School Summer Program. You will receive credit at NYU and get to take classes at Tisch. That will be helpful for you in particular because you’ll get a better feel for what the NYU Tisch education is really like. I know some people that did it and they all really loved their classes and the experience.
At my audition they made a big deal of the fact that audition and application are weighted 50/50, and that they generally accept students with GPA’s in the A-B range. But again, it all depends. A strong application/essay/transcript could make up for a mediocre audition and vice versa.
