cumulative 2.58 GPA

1690 SAT (Verbal 530, Math 560, Writing 600)

I also have impressive work experience and community service, but that doesn't help much for Cal States.

I did horribly freshmen and sophomore year but did extremely well junior year and am doing even better so far in my senior year. I'm hoping universities will be able to see past my grades from the first 2 years and see that I am redeeming myself.

Here are the schools I applied to:

CSU Northridge (I am in their local area and my dad is alumni)

CSU Channel Islands (I am in their local area)

CSU Monterey Bay

Any chance I'll get into any of these? Also, should I bother applying to either Chico, San Francisco or San Jose?

I think you have a good to excellent chance at Northridge and Channel Islands because of the local area boost and your SAT scores being above the average. Your CSU index is 3154 and I am not sure what the average index is for out of area students at the other schools are but I think SJ and SF have a high local population that make it less accessible for your GPA. I think Chico and Monterey are worth applying to because they have a smaller population of local students and your SAT scores are higher than average. The Cal states you are applying to, do not use your freshman year grades. I do not know if that will make a difference in the GPA you posted but if it does then apply to the SJ and SF if it is higher than 2.58. Good luck to you I think you have a good chance and you seem to be working for it now.

The good news is the CSU Index doesn’t include freshman grades. They also exclude non-college prep classes drop +/- when calculating your CSU GPA.

With a 3150, Chico is probably out of reach. Monterey, SF, Sonoma, Channel Islands and even Sac State are highly likely to take you. SJSU varies greatly by major. Here’s where they drew the line last year.

I applied to CSU Monterey Bay, CSU Channel Islands, CSU Northridge and University of Arizona. So far I’ve gotten into all of them but I’m waiting for a decision for Monterey Bay!
