Do I have a chance? Need direction!

Hello CC! I am a senior who is looking to apply to some 7-8 year accelerated medical programs. My counselor recommended that I look into some, given that I expressed my interest to become a neurosurgeon.

Well, I have been sifting through this site, and I am absolutely terrified in terms of admissions. As an only child and in a school where nobody applies to these programs, I am lost.

It would be great if you could help me out with both chances and recommended programs. I live in NJ and prefer to stay north east.

Here are my stats:

SAT: 2180 first, 2320 second, 2370 superscore
GPA: 4.24 weighted, not sure about unweighted
Probably 2 or 3 in my class. School does not rank at all.
SAT2: 800 chem, 800 math 2, 800 phys, 800 history, 750 bio E.

Courseload: Taken the most rigorous courses available to me. So far, 5's on everything (apush, world history, chem, lit, stats)

Extracurricular:
In school:
Chemistry Team we compete in the Olympics in NJ. 4th place and 5th place in a few events. president
Debate Team (varsity for 2 years). treasurer
Columbia Science Honors program
Key Club member, 50ish hours of community service (i have 20-30 tutoring in school, and 10-20 from volunteering at church).
Student representative to the Board of Education (committe made up of all the administrators of all schools) for 2-3 years now
Particpated in the Merck State Science, Science Olympiad, and the Science league. 1st in county in Merck, 15th in state.
physics team: the TEAMS competition. our team was 9th or 8th.

Medical extracurricular:
Became an EMT over the summer (only one in my school lol), certified in about 1-2 weeks
Shadowed in an internal medicine clinic for 2 summers now, the doctor will write me a letter of recommendation
20 hours of clinical time at hospital.

GPA and test scores are fine.
And do you mean you took an EMT course in 2 weeks or you will be certified in 2 weeks?

thanks for the response! and i will be certified in two weeks. my volunteer agency lets me ride with them occasionally. once i get certified I will formally employed as an emt

That’s good. Im in the same boat as you. I live in NJ too but I’m a junior taking an EMT course alongside school(which is probably the stupidest mistake I have ever made). Anyway I’ll be certified in December. Good luck on the final exam.

Nice! i actually took the exam a few days ago. if you can pass your course’s exam, then im sure you will pass the test. certification takes like 3-4 weeks.

and if anyone else can give me their analysis that would be great!

Go to the consolidated programs and the admission guide discussion sites listed here under multiple degree programs. Pick out 8 or 10 you really like and consider TCNJ and the other schools that partner with UMD med school. Remember these and regular honors programs with their academic scholarships have Nov cut offs so time is critical. TheNJ Governors summer school offered free UG tuition with one of the state schools but I can’t remember if they were partnered with UMD.

You are in the ballpark for all but Brown’s combined is like winning the lottery. research academic scholarships also so you don’t get buried in UG debt

Get cracking.

^Hahaha, I recognize the zip code in your name. I used to live there.

Anyway back to OP. You have a good chance but research would be nice. But don’t really worry about it. A lot of people don’t do research and still get in. Just apply widely and hope for the best. Good luck!
