Do I have a chance of getting admitted into the University of Maryland College Park?

Hello everyone,

I am a prospective student hoping to attend a 4 year University. However, the school I attend is very small with a graduating class of only 100+. Accelerated, honors, and AP classes are very limited as well. With this being said though, I have taken the hardest courses possible.

I am currently in the top ten percent of my class with a 95.79, or 3.83 GPA unweighted. These are the classes I have taken or am currently enrolled in:

English I, II, III honors
AP Literature and Composition
Calculus
CP Biology
CP Chemistry
Anatomy and Physiology
CP Physics
CP World History and CP US History I
US History II Honors
Sociology & Genocidal Studies
French I, II, III, IV
Spanish II, III
AP Spanish
Personal Finance & Computer Applications
Computer Literacy & Applications

At my school, I have won an award for "Excellence in Foreign Language." I have been awarded a certificate by the American Chemistry Society for having the highest GPA in the Chemistry course offered at my school. I am also acknowledged as the best writer at my school which has been included in my recommendation letters.

I have and/or currently participate in:

Cross Country- 10,11, 12 (On Varsity all three years)
Track & Field- 10,11, 12 (On Varsity Squad)
Church Youth Group
Police Explorers- 12

Work Experience:

Landscaper for Jay's Landscaping- 11, 12
Cashier/Store Associate for Party City- 12

Intern Experience:

Virtual Journalist Intern for Online Webzine - 11

Volunteer Experience:

Student Mentor- 12
Restore Volunteer for Habitat for Humanity- 12

I will be the first-generation family member to attend college and the first in my family to attend college. I am Hispanic. My recommendations are excellent; one is from my History/Cross Country coach who has known me for three years. Another recommendation is from my former French teacher who is now a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania. She details how she always saw my future as working with the International Nations/United Nations because of my linguistic skills. My essay is also very good as it details how I felt like King Arthur when I was younger, why I joined the sports I did, and how I see myself in the future (hopefully as an FBI Special Agent).

However, my SAT's were low with a 1710. Breakdown is 570 CR, 580 Math, 560 WR. This is my only worry, but I did study and retake them in hopes to receive a score of 1900+. I do plan on taking subject tests in French, Biology, and Math Level II which I should score 650+ on each test.

With this all being said, do I have a shot at the University of Maryland-CP? (sorry for writing so much, just really overwrought about getting into college)

Your GPA is good, but your SAT like you mentioned is pretty low. I applied for UMCP with a 1850-1890 and GPA weighted 3.67 and got rejected. UMCP is becoming more and more competitive. With stellar students already around the area ( where I live- Montgomery county) , and MANY people trying to apply- it has become really competitive. But I do know one of my friend got in for spring admission ( denied for fall) with an excellent essay but with lower scores than I have. So just take a shot.
UMBC is also a great school, and upcoming school you should also consider.
Good luck!

Thanks! Hoping for the best for my new SAT scores.
