They only look at unweighted. Not at this point. See if your school uses naviance or the like and see where these scores fall into who got accepted from your school in the past.
Your GPA and SAT are on the low side for Michigan, but you already know that. On the positive side you are in one of the feeder schools to Michigan. If you went to a Michigan middle school and graduate from Int Academy (6 years total) you would be eligible for in-state tuition, and presumably would be considered an in-state applicant, another plus, but you would have to check with the admission office. Do you have a green card? In-state residents have lower admission standards. A better score on the SAT, and/or a 32+ ACT would be very helpful. You should definitely apply, and keep up the grades for your senior year.
Also consider which school you apply to: Engineering and Ross have the highest standards, LSA next, and the other schools a bit less. If you are a female applying to Engineering you might also have some relaxed standards, as long as your math and science grades and SAT/ACT is good too.
Thank you, I do have a green card. I might plan to apply for the IOE program (Industrial Engineering) but I’m still undecided on what I want to do. I really really really want to get in but I’m not sure of what I should expect. At my school, 60% of people are admitted to U of M, but since my GPA atm is a bit lower (I should be able to get it up after this semester), I don’t know what to think.
It will be a high reach for you. Students with much higher GPAs and test scores are rejected. The only advice I have is 1) Retake SAT to see if you can improve your score, and 2) Apply early action. After that, it’s out of your hands.
My sons in IOE. Your stats are way to low. Look at Naviance or the like to see who stat wise they are admitting from your school. Engineering is 3.93 with like a 33/34 Act OOS
They aren’t way low considering the school but it would still be reachy probably compared to classmates.
A chance? Yes. Of course you do. But what are the chances? No way we can know. Your GC has the best knowledge regarding that as she has likely seen this play out numerous times.
Make sure you get some other schools on your list where you are most certainly going to be accepted.
Admission is very much school dependent. My son also went to an in-state feeder school with a 100% admission in EA add about 60% in Regular (aka late) admission during his year. Naviance indicated kids were generally admitted with 3.3+ and ACT of 28. There were scattered lower admissions but they were likely athletes and/or artists. Michigan really wants good in-state kids. They give certain schools - the feeder schools - a significant ‘bump’ in GPA when they review admissions because of the rigor of the school. Cranbrook and Greenhills are a few examples, IA is in there too.
Even so, Engineering and Ross are more difficult. My son was accepted to Engineering and denied Ross PA even with a near perfect admission profile. (Apparently it was only perfect for engineering - but he ultimately decided to complete a masters in ChemE through SUGS). If you choose to apply to Michigan engineering rather than one of the easier schools (LSA, etc), you should have a backup plan. Michigan Tech and MSU would likely admit you with your current stats and they both have excellent programs.
